The Inhumans are coming to IMAX and ABC TV.

The movie may be on hold but The Inhumans project is back on and hitting the big screens in a different way.

Marvel Television announced an innovative agreement to exclusively premiere the new ABC series “Marvel’s The Inhumans” in IMAX commercial theatres. This launch will mark the first time a live-action television series has debuted in this manner.

Fans have been introduced to Inhumans on Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. television series. It’s time to meet the Royal Family.

The Inhumans are descended from ancient humans who were experimented on by the Kree (Ronan in Guardians of the Galaxy is a member of this alien empire) as soldiers in their ongoing wars. The most famous Inhumans from comics are a Royal Family who live in a hidden city called Attilan. Black Bolt is the King, Medusa is the Queen. Crystal, Triton, Karnak, Gorgon and Lockjaw are members of the ruling family.

In their society, a young Inhuman undergoes a ritual called Terrigenesis when they are teenagers. Exposure to Terrigen Crystals unlocks the DNA and transforms them, giving them abilties and often strange appearances. In a battle with Thanos during the Infinity comics event, Black Bolt exploded a Terrigen Bomb causing Terrigen Mists to flow across the planet and transforming all humans with hidden Inhuman DNA in their genes. On Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. there was a similar secret society and ritual but the Terrigen crystals were grounded and entered the food supply which created new Inhumans on the television show.
Here’s more from today’s announcement:

Under the agreement, a version of the first two episodes of Marvel Television’s new series “Marvel’s The Inhumans”–produced in conjunction with ABC Studios and filmed entirely with IMAX digital cameras–will run worldwide exclusively in IMAX for two weeks at the beginning of September 2017. ABC plans to then premiere the weekly series in fall, with additional exclusive content that can only be seen on the network.

The Inhumans, a race of superhumans with diverse and singularly unique powers, were first introduced in Marvel Comics by Stan Lee and Jack Kirby in 1965. Since that time, they have grown in prominence and become some of the most popular and iconic characters in the Marvel Universe. “Marvel’s The Inhumans” will explore the never-before-told epic adventure of Black Bolt and the royal family.

ABC, IMAX and Marvel Television also intend to work together to create a joint marketing and promotion plan for the series across their proprietary media platforms–which would be the first such cross-platform marketing launch of a television series. Today’s agreement also marks IMAX’s first time as a financing participant in a TV pilot and series.

“This unprecedented alliance represents a bold, innovative approach to launching great TV content for a worldwide audience,” said Ben Sherwood, co-chairman, Disney Media Networks and president, Disney|ABC Television Group. “It highlights Disney|ABC’s unrelenting commitment to finding new and creative ways to showcasing our very best programming and increasing global engagement and reach.”

“This first-of-its-kind multi-platform production, distribution and marketing agreement brings together Marvel Television’s unique brand of entertainment, ABC’s unparalleled audience and IMAX’s brand and global fanboy demographic,” said IMAX CEO, Rich Gelfond. “It also takes our decades-long relationship with The Walt Disney Company to a whole new level, jointly breaking new ground in the industry. We are confident our exhibition partners will be excited to work with us on this innovative launch of a series across the IMAX network.”

“We’re happy to see this unique deal come together, working with our partners,” said Dan Buckley, President, Marvel Television, Publishing & Brand. “In an ever-changing world of distribution and consumption, it’s very exciting to be part of a groundbreaking initiative that takes us to the forefront of this evolution.”

This deal also provides audiences with high-quality, compelling entertainment options during what have traditionally been lulls in the summer blockbuster season. These IMAX audiences also tend to have high engagement and positive response to comic book fare.

Back to the geek story behind the story aka what you should know about the Inhumans comic book canon connections:

Quake/Daisy on Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. is an Inhuman.

Black Bolt (seen below with his brother) rarely speaks. When the King even whispers his voice can destroy a mountain.

Black Bolt’s brother is Maxmimus the Mad, a genius who can allied with his brother, betrayed him and formed partnerships with other Marvel super villains.

In the comics Crystal (an elemental) was a member of the Avengers, dated Johnny Storm of the Fantastic Four and had a daughter with Quicksilver, Avenger and son of Magneto.

Medusa (when she was brainwashed) was a member of the Frightful Four, later joined the Fantastic Four and her son attended the Future Foundation.

Black Bolt is the King of the Inhumans of Attilan. He destroyed the city and detonated the Terrigen Bomb in a battle with Thanos and left Medusa to rebuild. She left him and is now dating Johnny Storm. Black Bolt’s endgame for his actions are still unknown.

Thanos (the big bad guy in all Marvel’s movies) has a son (Thane) living among a different tribe of Inhumans on Earth.

The Inhumans are at war with the X-Men. The Terrigen Mists that create new Inhumans are killing and sterilizing mutants.

The Royal Family’s city is Attilan. It has been located in the Himalayas, the Blue Area of the Moon, off the coast of Europe and New Attilan is currently in the waters near New York City.

No word on casting or which characters will appear yet.

The Inhumans was originally scheduled as a movie.

“Marvel’s The Inhumans” arrive in 2017.
