Ant-Man revealed secrets of the Marvel Cinematic Universe with a blast into the past that made longtime comics readers swoon.
We know Steve Rogers became Captain America: The First Avenger, Bruce Banner tried to replicate the Super Soldier formula and became The Incredible Hulk, Tony Stark suited up as Iron Man, Thor came to Earth to become worthy again and Nick Fury called in Black Widow and Hawkeye for The Avengers Initiative.
Are there other superheroes with classified adventures yet to be revealed in Marvel movies and shows?
Now we know…well before we continue here’s a SPOILER ALERT in case you have not seen Ant-Man yet.
Here.
We.
Go.
Fan-favorite founding Avengers Hank Pym and Janet Van Dyne are part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The original Ant-Man and Wasp were costumed heroes who went on covert missions for S.H.I.E.L.D. as we saw in flashbacks. The daring duo’s missions were the stuff of legend, “Tales to Astonish” as the film’s villain said in a nod to the first appearance of Ant-Man. Like their comic book counterparts, Hank and Janet were hit by tragedy. When Janet was lost on a mission, Hank had a major confrontation with SHIELD leaders including Peggy Carter and Howard Stark in flashback.
Hank Pym and Janet’s legacy will go on with Scott Lang and Hope Van Dyne as the new Ant-Man and Wasp but there’s hope Janet could return.
The revelation of Ant-Man and Wasp makes us ponder…are there more costumed heroes in Marvel’s Cinematic past we might see in future movies or shows?
Here are four classic heroes we want to see as part of Marvel’s secret history:
Mar-Vell! The Kree were introduced in Guardians of the Galaxy and appeared on Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. The aliens came to ancient Earth to create an army of Inhumans, soon to be the basis of major Marvel movie and the next season of AofS. Captain Marvel (Carol Danvers) will soar in her own solo movie. Danvers is the current hero with the famous code-name. The original Captain Marvel was Mar-Vell, a Kree soldier sent to spy on Earth and posed as a human scientist named Dr. Walter Lawson. Mar-Vell would form a bond with Hulk sidekick Rick Jones and fought with the Avengers during the Kree-Skrull War and became a champion for Earth. Captain Marvel clashed with Thanos (the big bad of Avengers and Guardians of the Galaxy) and Mar-Vell eventually died of cancer in the classic graphic novel The Death of Captain Marvel by Jim Starlin. Marvel could reveal the secret history of this classic hero given Avengers honorary membership who inspired Carol Danvers and is connected to so many heroes, villain and aliens of future Marvel movies.
Wonder Man/Simon Williams! The son of rich industrialist who lost his company because of competition from Stark. Simon became a ion energy empowered hero with super strength, flight, enhanced endurance and senses. When he wasn’t an Avenger, Simon worked in Hollywood as an actor and stuntman. Williams was in suspended animation for years and a pawn of super villains. The idea of a hero masquerading as a actor/stuntman who never hits the big time is perfect for Agent Carter or an Avengers flashback. If Brett Dalton wasn’t already playing Grant Ward he’s a dead ringer for Simon except for the red ion eyes!
Monica Rambeau/Captain Marvel! Carol Danvers is the current Captain and will be the star of the upcoming Marvel movie but Rambeau was the first woman to have the famous code-name. Monica was New Orleans Harbor Patrol officer exposed to an alien weapon giving her the power to convert her body to various forms of energy. Monica became Avengers team leader and later took on the code-names Photon then Pulsar. Monica is now known as Spectrum and will be part of the new Ultimates comic book series this Fall. We fully support the Carol Corps and their devotion to Carol Danvers but we’d love to see the heroic Monica Rambeau using any code-name she wants.
Jim Hammond/Human Torch! Seeing Hank and thinking of Janet make us really nostalgic and say why not the first Marvel hero? The original Human Torch was an android created by Dr. Phineas Horton in Marvel Comics #1 published what was then Timely Comics. The Human Torch, Captain America and Namor the Sub-Mariner were the big three of Timely then lost in time. The name was then used for the Fantastic Four. Hammond, Namor and Cap were united again in The Invaders, a flashback series revealing lost adventures of this super team in World War II. Imagine this classic hero on Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. or in a Captain America flashback? Hey, it’s a comic book movie, maybe Steve did have adventures with Jim, Namor, Toro and more Invaders that could lead to a modern-day reunion?
