Long before the word “bromance” or “buddy cop” movies there was a team book featuring the coolest dudes in comics.
Marvel is bringing back Power Man and Iron Fist by David Walker (Cyborg, Shaft)and Sanford Greene. This marks a reunion for fan favorites Luke Cage and Danny Rand who co-starred in the 1970’s era comic as “Heroes-for-Hire.”
Both men would become Avengers and the inspiration for two new Marvel/Netflix television series.
As Walker explains, when Marvel asked who he wanted to write, the choice was easy to make:
“About a year ago or so, [Marvel Editor-In-Chief] Axel Alonso asked me to list all the characters that I wanted to work with the most,” Walker tells Fast Company. “He said, ‘Don’t be limited—go as big as you want.’ At the very top of that list were Luke Cage and Danny Rand, and I put in parentheses after their names: ‘as a team.’ Because this was something that I’d wanted to see for years and years. That particular duo, they’re so iconic. As a writer, you love interesting characters, and those two characters are so fun to delve into. They are the ultimate bromantic couple.”
In current continuity, Cage is married to former private eye Jessica Jones and retired from the Avengers. Danny Rand just starred in an epic that redefinined the hero and gave him a new costume in a book by Kaare Andrews.
Mike Colter will play Cage on the Netflix series. Danny Rand has not been cast yet for his series. Both characters will join Jessica Jones and Daredevil for a Defenders series.
Look for the new Power Man and Iron Fist in early 2016.
Fact: Wolverine villain Sabretooth made his first appearance in Power Man and Iron Fist not an X-book. Legendary X-Men team Chris Claremont and John Byrne were the creative team on the Cage/Rand series.
