The Marvel Universe is coming to an end.
Not even the Earth’s Mightiest Heroes can save it.
The Avengers and Illuminati (in New Avengers) have been fighting to save Earth from destruction by rival worlds. The incursions are when two dimensions occupy the same point and six hours later one or both worlds are obliterated.
The fight against the incursions has been the main plot of Jonathan Hickman’s epic run since 2013 that will end with the start of Secret Wars. It was hero vs hero in the race to save the world as Hickman took us 8 months into the future as the Time Runs Out arc builds up to his big finale.
One of the biggest mysteries of Hickman’s run is who caused the incursions leading to a premature death of the multiverse.
The cause of the incursions has been revealed.

The Earth is doomed.
Doctor Doom went through the Multiverse with Molecule Man and then turned up as leader of the Black Swans.
In New Avengers #31, Hickman revealed mystery man Rabul Alal (The Great Destroyer) was actually Victor Von Doom working with the Beyonders. The reveal is part of how the writer sees the iconic character he wrote back on his Fantastic Four run:
“Yeah, I’ve never thought he was a straight villain. Sure, he’s incredibly flawed and such a pragmatist that we would often look at what he does as villainy, but I think there’s a lot of nobility in him. Much like Magneto in the mutant world, it’s very easy to understand where Doom is coming from. So if you can easily understand the perspective of the villain, it becomes very easy to write them from that position. And depending on the kind of story you’re telling, perhaps they’re not wrong at all. It’s that their methods that are,” Hickman told Comic Book Resources.
So, you’re not wrong. As we get into “Secret Wars” proper this will get even more interesting.”
How did Doom become Rabul Alal? Is the Great Destroyer going to be the big villain of Secret Wars?
