The final Man of Steel trailer inspired this list of  some favorite Superman stories by some of the most celebrated comic book creators to get your ready for Superman’s big screen comeback:

 

All-Star Superman The Man of Steel is stricken with a fatal disease and prepares for his final days and a final confrontation with Lex Luthor. Why did this Superman wear jeans? It was just part of the bold new take on the hero and the world’s first encounter with this younger Superman. In Volume 2: Bulletproof Clark Kent dies? Why the hero ditches his alter ego and faces a new enemy!

 

Superman: Last Son of Krypton by the superstar team of Geoff Johns, director Richard Donner and artist Adam Kubert! A rocket lands on Earth with a boy Superman believes is from Krypton. Kal-El must protect the child from Lex Luthor, the Phantom Zone villains and more of his classic rogues gallery out to exploit the powerful child while trying to understand what Christopher Kent’s arrival means to him. Superman: For Tomorrow One of most intriguing creative teams ever on the Man of Steel with writer Brian Azzarello and spectacular art by Jim Lee. Tragedy strikes Earth. Millions have vanished. Superman/Batman Jeph Loeb and Ed McGuinnes created incredible stories of loyalty and unlikely friendship between the Man of Steel and the Dark Knight. In Volume One the duo are declared Public Enemies when they stand against President Lex Luthor and the late Michael Turner joined Loeb for Volume Two in which a Supergirl is protected by Wonder Woman, sought after by Darkseid and her discovery tests the friendship between the icons.

 

Superman For All Seasons is the tale of Superman’s journey from Smallville to Metropolis by the iconic team of Jeph Loeb and Tim Sale (Batman The Long Halloween, Marvel color themed books.).

 

Superman: Birthright is a modern day retelling of the hero’s origin by Mark Waid and Leinil Yu that became Superman origin canon.

 

The Death of Return of Superman The game-changing epic by Mike Carlin with an all-star team including Dan Jurgens. Superman dies in battle with the alien Doomsday leading to four new heroes in Reign of the Supermen and Kal-El eventual return!
