Fox’s Fantastic Four reboot is diverting from comic book canon.
Fans are still debating the casting of the actors playing Marvel’s First Family but what will we think about a radical reworking of one of Marvel’s most iconic villains?
Toby Kebbell (Dawn of the Planet of the Apes, Wrath of the Titans) is playing Doom in director Josh Trank’s film.
Is the scientific genius, master of dark arts and ruthless dictator of Latveria going to be a hacker in the reboot?
“He’s Victor Domashev, not Victor Von Doom in our story,” Kebbel said in a Collider video interview. “And I’m sure I’ll be sent to jail for telling you that… I’m a programmer; very anti-social programmer. And on blogging sites I’m ‘Doom.'”
Stan Lee and Jack Kirby created Victor Von Doom (Dr. Doom) as a contemporary of Reed Richards who would later become the dictator of his homeland and lifelong enemy of the Four. The disfigured genius lived in a powerful suit of armor and created multiple Doombots to impersonate him if needed.
In the Ultimate Comics Universe the villain was known as Victor Van Damme (a descendant of Dracula who worked with Richards in a government think tank.)
Perhaps this new modern version of Doom will take inspiration from this image from the Victor Von Doom limited series?
We’ll see when The Fantastic Four opens August 7, 2015.
