One of the most radical reinventions of the Children of the Atom is born again in as the Secret Wars event continues this week.
X-Men in black leather, Professor X’s evil twin sister “outed” him, Emma Frost joined the team, Beast went feline and kids with some of the weirdest mutations and appearances join the school.
It was the New X-Men era by writer Grant Morrison and artist Frank Quitely. E is for Extinction was the first game-changing arc (Cassandra Nova emerges and kills millions of mutants on Genosha) and the title of the new Secret Wars tie-in book this week.
E is For Extinction reveals a new realm of Doctor Doom’s Battleworld built on the ashes of the destroyed Marvel Universe.
Artist Chris Burnham is Morrison’s frequent collaborator (Batman, Incorporated, Nameless) and is writing the new story with Ramon Villalobos as artist.
“It’s almost an alternate timeline version of it. It’s almost like another take on events from the first issue and spin wildly out of control from there. It’s not quite a WHAT IF…? or alternate timeline, it’s just coming out of the SECRET WARS events,” Burnham told Comic Vine.
The New X-Men era continues to have a major impact on recent X-writers. Jason Aaron made Quentin Quire an integral part of his cast, The Stepford Cuckoos were part of Uncanny X-Men by Brian Bendis, villain John Sublime was in Brian Wood’s X-Men first arc and Fantomex was back for Uncanny X-Force by Rick Remender.
One of the biggest twists of the Morrison era was Xorn was actually Magneto who turned the students against Xavier and Cyclops and killed Jean Grey the second time.
From earlier previews why Magneto is leading the Xavier School?
