Magneto is about to do it again…lighting a fuse that will ignite huge new drama for the X-Men.
Tensions are high between Inhumans and mutants. The Terrigen Mists creating new Inhumans are killing mutants. Magneto is leading a pro-active squad of Uncanny X-Men in the All-New, All-Different Marvel Now. Storm’s Extraordinary X-Men team are trying to rescue as many mutants as they can. Beast is working with Medusa in Uncanny Inhumans. Cyclops is believed to be dead after an attack on the Inhumans.
The cold war between the rival races flares up in midst of Civil War II. Iron Man and Captain Marvel are at odds over the emergence of Ulysses, a new Inhuman with the power to predict the future. A classic hero is dead and an Avenger is clinging to life after the Ultimates use of the Inhuman’s power backfired in a tragic way.
In Civil War II: X-Men #1 by Cullen Bunn, the mutant teams learn of Ulysses. The Master of Magnetism sees this powerful new man as a new threat tipping the scales in favor of Inhumans. Magneto will make a move on the Inhumans, Storm’s Extraordinary X-Men will attempt to stop him and a genetic war is on.
Magneto has been branded a villain, terrorist, freedom fighter, anti-hero, vigilante and even Xavier School headmaster. As we wait and see if Magnus will spark a full on X-Men vs Inhumans war, let’s look at the icon’s boldest moves that shaped the history of the mutant heroes.
Here are Magneto’s biggest moments:
Magneto’s first strike in Uncanny X-Men #1
The story that started it all. The Master of Magnetism attacks Cape Citadel and brought down missiles. Professor X stopped his assault. Magneto recruits his Brotherhood of Evil Mutants and builds Asteroid M, his outer space base.
Magneto’s redemption begins in Uncanny X-Men #150
Magneto nearly killed rookie member Kitty Pryde during an encounter on his island base. The villain nearly killing a child reminded him of his childhood under the Nazis. He realized he nearly killed one of the young mutants he was trying to create a better world for, stood down and took off. Professor X saw this a sign his old friend could change.
Trial of Magneto in Uncanny X-Men #200
Prior to this milestone issue, Magneto learned Scarlet Witch and Quicksilver were his children, he was a granddaughter and formed an alliance with the X-Men and other heroes against the alien invader known as the Beyonder.
This is where it gets tricky because Magneto was “reborn” so to speak and considered not guilty of the actions of his previous self. This allows Magneto to be cleared of crimes before a world tribunal. As the trial ended the Fenris twins (children of Baron Wolfgang Von Strucker) attacked. Professor X was horribly injured and he asked Magneto to become the Xavier School headmaster while he recovered. Magneto lead the New Mutants but it was a disaster and he was in a push and pull as more mutant conflicts arose.
Magneto in the Savage Land in Uncanny #274, 275
Magneto teamed up with Rogue, Nick Fury and Ka-Zar to resore peace to the Savage Land but in a move that severed Rogue’s hopes of his reform, Magneto stole his powers back from Zaladane and executed her. He renounced his efforts to mentor the New Mutants and Xavier’s dream of peace between mutants and humans.
X-Men #1 Mutant Genesis
Magneto became a figurehead of a religious type movement of mutants called Acolytes ruling a floating refuge in Asteroid M now called Avalon, steals nuclear missiles and positions them around his new mutant homeland in space.
Fatal Attractions
A depressed Colossus, mourning the death of his sister, accepted Magneto’s invitation to join him in Avalon. The X-Men confront Magneto. In the battle, the Master of Magnetism commits a horrific act: pulling the adamantium out of Wolverine’s body. Professor X reacts by wiping out his old friend’s mind.
An unstable Scarlet Witch created a new reality in which Magneto ruled over an Earth where mutants were safe and dominated the Earth. The dreamworld didn’t last. When Magneto learned Quicksilver was behind Wanda’s manipulation, he killed his own son. An angry Wanda resurrected Pietro but declared, “no more mutants.” This decimation wiped out the mutant gene, took away the mutant powers from millions of mutants and put them on the fast track to extinction.
Nation X
Cyclops built a mutant nation from the remains of Asteroid M. Magneto returned and pledged his allegiance to Cyclops. As a way to prove his trust he used his power to bring Kitty Pryde back to Earth, after she had been trapped in giant bullet soaring through space.
You definitely want the Master of Magnetism on your side if you go to war.
Will Magneto attack the Inhumans? Will Magneto attack Storm and her team in order to capture Ulysses? What will Magnus do if he is able to harness the power of this Inhuman?
The drama continues in Civil War II: X-Men by Cullen Bunn.
