Showtime announced Kyle MacLachlan has officially signed on to headline the Twin Peaks revival. The new nine-episode series will start production in 2015 and is scheduled to premiere in 2016 on the 25th anniversary of the original series finale on ABC.

Original creators David Lynch and Mark Frost are back to executive produce the follow-up series set 25 years later.

MacLachlan played FBI Special Agent Dale Cooper who came to the Pacific Northwest town of Twin Peaks to solve the murder of Laura Palmer.

Fans of the beloved series will remember Cooper’s dream  in which Laura said, “I’ll see you again in 25 years” and they were together again 25 years in the future.

MacLachlan hinted at his possible return to the lead role in the cult classic series.

The actor is currently starring as “The Doctor” on Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. and is the father of Agent Skye. MacLachlan’s character is actually a major villain from Marvel comics history. Spoiler Warning but here’s the scoop on The Doctor and Skye’s comic book identities.

Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. returns in March.
