Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. producers revealed the mystery alien seen earlier in the series is a Kree in this week’s episode.
(Lee Pace played the Kree villain Ronan the Accuser in Guardians of the Galaxy.)
It’s been a major story thread since the show began. The blood of his alien led to Phil Coulson’s resurrection and saved Skye.
From next week’s episode preview – Skye and villainess Raina could be radically transformed by the Kree.
Raina (Ruth Negga) named the Kree for the first time in the episode saying her ancestors called them “blue angels” and a device called the diviner could transform humans.
“With Raina we know that she has been on a path,” Maurissa Tancharoen told Marvel.com. “We’ve learned in her conversations with Skye’s father–and also with Agent Garrett last season–that she’s been told these stories of evolution and destiny, and so it’s very much part of her lifelong quest to achieve this goal of hers. The Kree are a part of the stories she’s heard her whole life.”
“Raina’s evangelical about growth and progress, not just for herself but for the world,” adds Negga. “This idea of evolution is so important to her, for us to evolve into something bigger and greater, whatever that may be.
“These stories that her grandmother has told her promise the arrival of something. A change that’s coming that’s been promised for however many years, passed down from generation to generation. The return of something that was once here that will come again and bring about something better, more progressive. I think that’s what the Kree represent for Raina.”
This week’s big Kree revelation is significant to the future of the Marvel Cinematic Universe:
Ronan from Guardians of the Galaxy was a renegade Kree. Carol Danvers was exposed to a Kree device giving her the powers of Captain Marvel – soon be a be a Marvel film. The Inhumans (on Marvel’s list of future movies) are descended from ancient humans experimented on by the Kree.
In comics Inhumans were a secluded society in a hidden city called Attilan. When an Inhuman came of age they underwent a ritual. After exposure to Terrigen Crystals – the cosmic mists unlocked Kree genes and gave the young Inhuman new powers and often strange appearances. Last year the King of Inhumans unleashed a Terrigen bomb and the mists went across the globe creating a new generation of NuHumans.
Is Attilan the secret city SHIELD and Hydra are racing to this season?
Will Raina and Skye become NuHumans and the first Inhumans in the Marvel television/movie universe?
Skye comes face to face with her father (Kyle MacLachlan) could be transformed (along with Raina) on the winter finale of Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. next Tuesday at 9pm on ABC. See Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. Season One again by ordering here.
