The outing of an X-Man may have dominated news and social media this week but something HUGE happened to another fan-favorite X-Man.
The long-distance love affair between Kitty Pryde and Peter Quill (aka Star-Lord) reached a pivotal moment in The Black Vortex: Omega this week.
The crossover between X-Men and Guardians of the Galaxy pitted the teams against the forces of Mister Knife and the Son of Thanos with billions of lives at stake.
Kitty and Peter first met during The Trial of Jean Grey crossover and began a long-distance relationship. When Quill’s sinister father kidnapped him and seized the powerful Black Vortex, Kitty went into deep space to save her man. The X-Men joined the fight that include their old enemies, The Brood.
The Black Vortex is an ancient artifact giving incredible powers but at the risk of losing your soul. The heroes may have won but the Guardians and X-Men were dramatically changed especially Kitty Pryde!
At Emerald City Comicon earlier this year I asked Mike Marts (then Executive Editor of the X-Men and Guardians books) about the unlikely relationship of Kitty and Peter. I admitted I always Kitty to end up with Colossus but now I couldn’t imagine Kitty and Quill not together. Was it a writer, editor or fan reaction that led to the romance dubbed #StarKat on Twitter?
Marts commented on the incredible chemistry between the characters but to watch for something big in the Black Vortex finale that is huge for fans of the new super couple.
Which brings us to this SPOILER ALERT!

Here it comes:
Kitty Pryde gave in to The Black Vortex and was cosmically enhanced like some of her other friends and allies. Given Kitty’s mutant phasing ability she was able to phase into the mystical mirror and used her power to phase an entire planet and save billions from being harvested by the Brood.
As I anxiously read this incredible finale by Sam Humphries I kept saying, “they’re not doing it again!”
In the finale of Joss Whedon’s Astonishing X-Men, Kitty was trapped in a massive alien bullet. She phased the weapon as it harmlessly passed through Earth but was permanently merged with it as it continues to speed across space. Years later, Magneto was able to bring the bullet near Earth and free Kitty from it.
Not only did Kitty survive but she and Quill’s romance became committed love as Star-Lord proposed to Kitty. She said yes. It seems Kitty is leaving the X-Men again is a space opera but this time with a much happier ending.
But not so fast…this might be a very long engagement!
The end of the Marvel Universe is coming next month and Secret Wars will begin with Battleworld, a single planet made of Warzones based on classic Marvel stories from past, present, future and beyond.
Humphries will write this next chapter of the legendary romance but where’s the real Kitty?
We may not find out until after the massive Secret Wars event and see the next evolution of the Marvel Universe.
