The Carol Corps was in force at GeekGirlCon 2013 in Seattle as writer Kelly Sue DeConnick made her first appearance at the third annual celebration of women in geek culture.
Geeks of all genders cheered as the Captain Marvel and Avengers Assemble writer took the stage. It was the first con where Captain Marvel cosplayers outnumbered the every-popular Black Widows, Harleys and Ivy’s. That fan devotion is part of the Captain’s success and big plans in 2014.
As part of the All-New Marvel Now initiative Captain Marvel will get a new number one. I asked DeConnick about the reasons for starting at one and how it inspires her to write for the fan-favorite Avenger.
“Because of tons of buzz and incredible, beautiful, amazing, creative invested fan base. And the numbers have been solid…you know but they haven’t been remarkable and I think that we were…we had a Marvel Now banner on issue nine…but we just pre-dated the rush with the whole new number ones so we didn’t get to be a part of that.”
There is an appear of a number one our number one has just missed it, had just came in before I think there’re just giving us an opportunity to be a part of it officially which speaks to Marvel’s commitment to this book and this character and I really appreciate it.
So we were talking if we have the opportunity to do this, how do we do it and make it warrant a new number one. The idea was everything about Carol is that she wants to go up so let’s let her go up and see what happens.”
Carol will “go cosmic” DeConnick declared at New York Comic Con as the pilot goes into space on a Buck Rogers style adventure.
Artist David Lopez joins DeConnick for Captain Marvel #1 in March.
