Karen Gillan (Doctor Who, Oculus) will play the villain Nebula in Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy but she may have her sights on another Marvel role…a hero.
“I want to play a version of Spider-Man that’s a lady,” Gillan told SFX.
When the interview wanted to confirm Spider-Woman or Spider-Girl Gillan responded.
“I want to play Spider-Girl.”
May “Mayday” is the daughter of Peter Parker and Mary Jane Watson -Parker from the near future introduced in the Marvel MC2 Universe. May was created by Tom DeFalco and Ron Frenz in 1998 and became the super hero that could.
While the other MC2 teen characters and books faded away, Spider-Girl became the longest running Marvel book featuring in female lead before being relaunched as the Amazing and later Spectacular Spider-Girl.
It’s very likely Mayday will appear in Spider-Verse – a major crossover in which every character (hero, villain, pet, etc from future and past) who ever had Spider in their name will appear.
Anya Corazon is a teen girl of Mexican and Puerto Rican descent who first went by the name Arana but later became Spider-Girl and was a member of Avengers Academy.
There are 5 women who have been Spider-Woman: Jessica Drew is the most famous and member of the Avengers, Julia Carpenter who later became known as Arachne plus Mattie Franklin, Charlotte Witter and the Skrull known as Veranke took the name. (Gillan is physically more like the Julia Carpenter version.)
Could Gillan as Spider-Girl happen? Sony controls the film rights to the Spider-Man franchise and if the guys can do it (Chris Evans, Ben Affleck) why can’t Gillan go from a bald, blue, evil alien to a friendly neighborhood Spider-Girl from the near future?
Gillan will be seen as the evil daughter of Thanos in Guardians of the Galaxy on August 1.
