Is the JSA returning with DC Rebirth?

Fans left the comic book shops with more questions on this new comic book day. The free DC Comics June Previews was available at stores with big updates on the DC Comics Rebirth titles launching in June and beyond.

The magazine includes bonus, behind-the-scenes details, including a foreword/introduction from DC Entertainment Chief Creative Officer and Rebirth “architect” Geoff Johns, details on his DC Universe: Rebirth Special.

We learned the identity of the new Superwoman and Suicide Squad writer Rob Williams teased one of three new villains joining the roster.

But this cover…teases the Multiverse and Justice Society in the Rebirth?

After the initial Rebirth announcement and WonderCon follow-up, fans wondered about the fate of the old school favorites Justice Society of America. Earth 2: Society was not on the reboot list. The cast of that book were different versions of the originals changed for The New 52. Most notably Green Lantern Alan Scott’s origin and sexual orientation were changed.

Is the original JSA returning? On the full wrap-around cover by Ivan Reis, Joe Prado and Alex Sinclair we see three teams in hourglasses. The first hourglass holds the original Justice Society including Scott, Dr. Fate, Hourman, Black Canary, Dr. Midnite and Jay Garrick, the Flash. The second holds the classic team of Superman, Batman, Wonder Woman, Aquaman, Flash, Cyborg, The Atom and Green Lantern Hal Jordan. The final hourglass holds the Rebirth Justice League along with other characters coming in the event. The final hourglass is being held by a mysterious giant hand – is this the same hand of the being the heroes are reaching for on the cover of the DC Universe: Rebirth one-shot.

The Previews issue teased the return of “three characters reintroduced to the DC Universe…with the promise of more” and “Multiversal Mayhem – a secret is exposed about the nature of the DC Universe, and why it lost what it lost – and will introduce the greatest threat it ever faced.”

Does this cover and tease signal the return of the JSA? DC Chief Creative Officer Geoff Johns started his career with the publisher and his rise to fan-favorite is tied to the JSA books so Rebirth could be his chance to return to the characters who helped catapult his career at DC.

DC Universe: Rebirth one-shot arrives May 25th.
