The Children of Atom will evolve with new challenges and opportunities in the wake of Secret Wars.
Marvel chose Jeff Lemire and Humberto Ramos to lead the next evolution of the X-Men.
The new flagship X-book comes with a new adjective.
Lemire reveals how he picked the roster for his “Extraordinary” X-Men team:
“For me, the biggest challenge was limiting the number of X-Men on the team. There are so many great X-characters; it was honestly very difficult to narrow it down to a manageable size.
But it all came down to creating a team that felt classic and iconic but also fresh and new at the same time. There are elements of the roster that harken back to the classic [Chris] Claremont/[John] Byrne years, but also new developments with certain characters, like Old Man Logan and young Jean Grey that make these old relationships totally new again.
And also…Colossus and Magik. My two favorites. No matter what, they were automatically going to be on this team. I love them. And since I’ve been writing the book for a while now, I’ve grown to love all the members just as much. Storm is incredible. And Iceman has really grown on me more and more.” Lemire told Marvel.com.
Part of Lemire’s roster is impacted by the events happening in the eight months after the Secret Wars finale. Something happens between the mutants and Inhumans and certain X-Men have vanished.
“I can’t say too much, but something has happened to Cyclops. He is missing and mutantkind is in dire straights. It’s no longer about someone just keeping Xavier’s dream alive. Someone has to keep mutantkind alive. And Storm is the one who has stepped up to carry that burden.
Storm is a really fascinating character. She’s such a bold and powerful woman. And that can rub some people the wrong way. Magik is equally as strong willed, so those two may have a bit of tension. And of course it would not be the X-Men if I didn’t have a few new romances in the works. But I’m not spoiling those.”
While Storm is sporting a new costume, Lemire confirmed Ororo is keeping the Mohawk.
Beast will be joining the Uncanny Inhumans because of the mutant/Inhuman cold war.
Emma Frost is also MIA from the upcoming X-books.
Stay tuned for updates.
