The New 52: Futures End #1 is finally in comic book shops. Fans got a first look at the new weekly series from DC Comics with a Zero issue on Free Comic Book Day.

Set 5 years in the future – an unlikely cast of heroes must stop disaster and change destiny.

Jeff Lemire, Brian Azzarello, Keith Giffen and Dan Jurgens are part of the all-star creative team. Batman Beyond, Frankenstein, Grifter, Mr. Terrific and Firestorm make up the eclectic cast on a desperate mission.

Lemire (Justice League United, Green Arrow) reveals it’s an old school hero he’s enjoying writing in a new DCComics.com interview. The new projects marks a reunion between writer and classic character:

“Ray Palmer has been a blast. Writing Ray as The Atom was my first DC gig, so getting back to him has been terrific. He is a lot of fun five years later…a bit unhinged. All the shrinking and growing has messed with his mind a bit. So he’s still brilliant, but a little on the edge. I kind of think of him as our “Walter” from Fringe, for those who have watched that show.  One minute he may seem totally insane and out of it, the next he comes up with something utterly brilliant.”

The New 52: Futures End #1 is in stores now. This marks the New 52 debut of Batman Beyond.
