Update: This story was posted before Marvel revealed the identity of the new star Invincible Iron Man after Civil War II.

We still stand by our speculation below since there are two Iron Man titles so read on and enjoy the theory:

The identity of Tony Stark’s real parents is a major mystery playing out in International Iron Man.

Stark’s grief over a lost friend and determination to seize control of a new Inhuman’s power is playing out in Civil War II. Both books are by Brian Michael Bendis.

Will Tony learn the identity of his parents just before getting killed off?

A new Marvel Now! promo poster fueled a fire in our brains about at least one side of Stark’s family tree. The Marvel Now! initiative will kick off new books in the aftermath of Civil War II. Tony is clearly missing but look who’s holding the iconic Iron Man helmet?

Marvel promised fans will learn the identity of Tony’s real mother in International Iron Man #5. Have we already met his biological father?

Before we continue here’s a SPOILER ALERT!

If you have not been reading Civil War II and Invincible & International Iron Man stop reading now.

Seriously.

OK.

Here it comes.

Eight months after Secret Wars, A younger Victor Von Doom (healed from his scars) joined Stark as an ally in his mission to find mystical artifacts.

Ulysses is a new Inhuman with the power to predict the future.

Based on a vision by Ulysses, Captain Marvel sought to trap the Mad God, who ended up killing James Rhodes aka War Machine in the fight.

Tony blames Carol and invaded New Attilan to kidnap and study Ulysses.

Tony is making enemies fast: Carol and those heroes who believe in this power of predictive justice, Medusa and her Inhumans. Plus, Bruce Banner is coming back and Ulysses had a vision the Green Goliath will kill Tony and the Avengers.

Here’s our emerging theory:

What if Victor Von Doom is Tony’s father? Given Doom’s journeys through time and mystical powers – it’s possible this is where Tony inherited his genius. What if the restored to youth Von Doom will become the new Iron Man of this Fall’s Marvel Now! initiative?

Doom is primarily a Fantastic Four foe but Marvel’s greatest overall villain. Reed, Susan and the kids are off exploring the new multiverse. What happened during those eight months after Secret Wars and the start of the All-New, All-Different Marvel Now in which Iron Man was the flagship character?

The flag may be flying at half staff when Marvel Now! begins and it could be all part of Von Doom’s plan all along?

If Von Doom becomes the new man in a new, different iron mask, then who will be Tony’s mother? Is the Iron Age of Tony Stark truly over?
