The success of Iron Man 3 is a reason to celebrate and speculate! Robert Downey Jr. is now reportedly negotiating with Marvel/Disney to reprise his role as Tony Stark in Avengers 2 and 3 but Iron Man 4 is not part of the discussions according to The Hollywood Reporter Heat Vision.
Avengers 2 is the finale of Marvel Phase Two (Iron Man 3, Thor: The Dark World, Captain America: The Winter Soldier, Guardians of the Galaxy.) Phase Three kicks off with Ant-Man and ends with Avengers 3.
The story goes on to say other Marvel heroes in consideration for the big screen treatment are Doctor Strange, Ms. Marvel, Iron Fist, The Runaways and Black Panther. The film rights to Daredevil, Blade and Ghost Rider have gone back to Marvel.
It should be noted that the story says Ms. Marvel. Carol Danvers was “promoted” to Captain Marvel in the comic books last year and stars in her own solo series and in Avengers and Avengers Assemble.
Op/Ed:
I really missed the Samuel L. Jackson/Nick Fury cameo in the latest Iron Man film. I hope the negotiations call for a Tony Stark cameo in Cap’s solo films. In the new Guardians of the Galaxy comic book Iron Man has joined the team so don’t be surprised to see the futurist Tony Stark at least cameo in the James Gunn directed film to bring some star power.
Ms. Marvel’s promotion to Captain Marvel was long overdue. Carol Danvers is a fan favorite character with strong relationships and is well respected by members of the Avengers and X-Men. Captain Marvel’s current writer Kelly Sue DeConnick could be a great addition to the Marvel Creative Team which includes fan favorite scribe Brian Michael Bendis and could help script an amazing Captain Marvel movie.
