Inhuman #1 is here. It’s well worth the wait.

If you’re coming in brand new or you’re an old school fan of Black Bolt and Medusa like myself you will be amazed by this gorgeous, fast paced first issue. Charles Soule and Joe Madureira create a compelling, kinetic story of new heroes and villains.

Here’s what you need to know:

Aliens (Kree) came to ancient Earth to experiment on humans – creating a new race. Inhumans had strange powers and appearances and lived in seclusion. Black Bolt and Medusa ruled a floating city of Inhumans and often fought with and against Avengers and the Fantastic Four.

When Inhumans reach a certain age they undergo a ritual with Terrigen crystals that unlock the alien DNA and give them new powers and often bizarre new appearances.

During Infinity – Black Bolt ignited a Terrigen Bomb to stop Thanos and save his race. The cloud spread across the globe triggering dormant genes and giving rise to new Inhumans.

With Inhuman #1 Soule and Madureira introduce us the major players in this strange new world that could play like an exotic hybrid of X-Men and Game of Thrones.

Lash – the antagonist with a “sacred” genetic agenda involving the new Inhumans.

Dante – the literal hot-heated protagonist, our “everyman” suddenly thrust into this painful, fascinating new war.

Medusa – the fallen Queen trying to find her lost King and son while protecting the new “children” being reborn.

Some will say Inhuman is similar to mutant – but I was still captivated by the portrayal of Medusa and the new characters. Aren’t most comic book stories about identity, unlocking your potential and finding your destiny? Inhuman may feel familiar but Soule and Madureira make the journey of these Inhumans fresh, compelling, dark and beautiful.
