HEROES IN CRISIS Inside SANCTUARY

How does a superhero handle PTSD? Writer Tom King will explore this theme in the upcoming HEROES IN CRISIS.

At San Diego Comic Con, King and DC Comics gave a intimate press conference with robes and gold masks to show the experience of being patient in Sanctuary, a therapy center for super people.

DC Comics confirmed King and artist Clay Mann (one of King’s BATMAN artists) will be joined by Mitch Gerads – King’s MISTER MIRACLE creative partner. The book explores Batman, Wonder Woman and Superman – handles violence and combat.

“I want to speak about, and to, this New War generation, the millions of people who have fought bravely overseas and have come home to try to return to their normal lives,” said King in the press event. “I want to talk about their hopes, their pains, their triumphs; I want to use DC’s heroes to tell their stories.”

Sanctuary is a secret space to help superheroes traumatized by combat. King said heroes like Aquaman, Superman, Lagoon Boy, Wonder Woman, The Flash, Arsenal, Batman, and more visit the therapy center. The “patients”go in anonymously, wearing robes and gold masks to hide their identities from each other.

King says in the first issue, “something goes inexplicably wrong and heroes wind up dead, with two well-known operators as the prime suspects.”

“But this book isn’t actually about Sanctuary,” said King. “It’s about the failures of Sanctuary. In that way, I’m writing about this moment in our history. We felt safe. We had security. Then something went horribly wrong. Is it possible to repair that? To fight that?”

Before writing THE SHERIFF OF BABYLON, THE OMEGA MEN, GRAYSON, BATMAN and MISTER MIRACLE, King served overseas as a CIA counterterrorism operations officer post-911.

“HEROES IN CRISIS is about heroes who have to live through violence to save the world, and what that violence does to them,” concluded King. “They make a sacrifice every time they go out to fight the bad guys. That sacrifice is at the heart of the series.”

Mann will draw the main issues of the limited series, Gerads will draw standalone issues strategically placed to give a deeper look into the overall story.

Booster Gold and Harley Quinn are the front of the cover. Why is everyone looking down while Harley looks straight at us? Whatever theory fans may have Booster and Harley will spike as the two spend more time together inside the first issue as seen by the preview art.

Will Harley revert back to her training as a therapist?

HEROES IN CRISIS #1 arrives on September 26, 2018.
