Screenwriter Nicole Perlman helped introduce Guardians of the Galaxy to the world at the movies. Now she will write her first comic book series starring Gamora.

Announced at the Women of Marvel New York Comic Con panel, the new Gamora ongoing will arrive in Spring 2015.

“One of the reasons I’m drawn to Gamora’s character is the gap between who she is in the film versus her cold-hearted reputation.

In the movie, Gamora is the ethical engine of the team—yet ironically is also the one with the most innocent blood on her hands. How did that personality change come about? At what point did she decide, “enough is enough?” These are the questions we are going to explore, through a story told in the present day,” Perlman told Marvel.com.

The adopted daughter of Thanos earned the reputation as “the deadliest woman in the galaxy” but evolved into an anti-hero. Perlman explains how she will use Gamora’s past to define who she is now.

“Gamora consists of many layers and contradictions. She defends the weak because, despite being the most dangerous woman in the galaxy, she spent much of her life manipulated into doing things she knew deep down were morally reprehensible. Having been Thanos’ tool once, she is now fiercely protective of her independence. Gamora can appear emotionally-closed off, but she also has a tenderness that emerges the longer she spends time with those she trusts. There is a sadness to her as well, knowing her hands will always carry the stain of innocent blood. All she can do is try her best to balance the scales, and come to forgive and accept herself for who she is now. An aspect of Gamora I hope to highlight is her desire to empower those without a voice; to show them how to free themselves not just from their oppressors, but from their own fears and hatred. Only then, will they have a fighting chance.”

This marks the third spinoff comic (Legendary Star-Lord, Rocket Raccoon) from Guardians of the Galaxy. After the Gamora announcement Marvel revealed a Guardians Team-Up by Brian Michael Bendis. The book will co-star Guardians and Avengers. If the solo series is a smash could this lead to our hope Gamora could star in her own solo spinoff movie.
