Marvel bet big on a nearly unknown group of anti-heroes and won bigger.

Guardians of the Galaxy conquered planet Earth with rave reviews. The outer space based renegades deliver a blast of new energy and opportunity into the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

We knew we’d meet Star-Lord, Drax, Gamora, Groot and Rocket along with Ronan, Nebula, The Collector and the Nova Corps but writer/director James Gunn packed the films with big surprises that could lead the Marvel movies into even bolder directions.

Who should be on deck to join Guardians 2?

Here’s what we said then after seeing the first trailer but after this blast of adventure we must update our list of heroes and villains for Guardians of the Galaxy 2 and beyond.

More KREE please!

The Supreme Intelligence – In the comics Ronan and Korath are renegade officers of the Kree Empire working for Thanos. The Kree are militaristic race with a huge impact on the Marvel universe. The Supremor is a giant floating organic computer that rules and guides the Empire. The minds of the greatest thinkers of the Empire are inputted into the living computer upon their deaths. A majority of the Kree race are fanatically devoted to it and worship it as their God. (On this page from All-New Marvel Now Point One you can see the massive green Great Intelligence along with a Skrull on the top, the Shi’ar Emperor bottom left and a blue Kree warrior bottom right.)

Carol Danvers – One of the most popular Avengers in the team’s history. Carol was an Air Force pilot kidnapped by a Kree soldier and exposed to the explosion of his alien device granting her super powers. Danvers would become Ms. Marvel join the Avengers and a new years ago became Captain Marvel, the title once held by a Kree soldier turned Avenger. Danvers already has a huge fan base from her years as Ms. Marvel but the Carol Corps grew with the success of her Captain Marvel solo book and appearances in the Avengers.

Marvel Boy Noh-Varr is the alien teen who fell to Earth. Noh-Varr was an ensign in the Kree military and the only survivor when his ship was crashed on Earth by an insane billionaire obsessed with alien technology. After a series of tragic encounters and imprisonment the arrogant alien youth declared war on the planet and the human race. Working with the Avengers and S.H.I.E.L.D. Noh-Varr was soften (a little) and learn to become a hero and later join the Young Avengers.

Inhumans The Kree influence again. The aliens experimented on primitive humans turning them into super-powered soldiers in their war against the Skrulls (below) and as guinea pigs for possible genetic manipulation on their own race. The Inhumans developed their own society and even had a ruling family. The Inhumans fought with and against the Avengers and Fantastic Four over the years. In the secret society, a young Inhuman would be exposed to the Terrigen Mist to unlock their alien DNA and ignite their power. During the recent event Infinity, Inhuman King Black Bolt detonated a Terrigen Bomb to stop Thanos. Now potentially millions of Inhumans are evolving on the planet. Since Fox controls the film rights to X-Men, Inhumans could be the Marvel franchise starring heroes and villain born with their powers. With their Kree and human origins, Inhumans could be the bridge between Avengers and Guardians.

Angela joined the Guardians last year. The warrior angel was ripped from another dimension and found a home with the alien outcast heroes. It’s been revealed she’s the half sister of Thor and Loki and there’s a Tenth Realm.

Nova – Glenn Close and John C. Reilly play officers of the Nova Corps – an intergalactic police force. Sam Alexander is a young man from Earth who recently join the Corps in his own Nova comic book. Sam is joining tNew Warriors, too. The Guardians guest starred in the Nova comic book series so it’s a good bet the success of this summer’s movie could mean the launch of a Nova spinoff movie. Sam recently faced the Chitauri (below) those aliens from The Avengers. The fate of original Nova (Richard Rider) and an untold tale of Star-Lord will be told in this months Guardians of the Galaxy.

SPOILER ALERT!

If you have NOT seen GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY yet STOP reading now!

The next characters on the list have a connection to the events in the film!

OK

Here it comes.

J’son of Spartoi – In comics Peter Quill is the hybrid son of the King J’son of Spartax. We didn’t learn who Yondu was working for when he abducted the young Quill, but it could have been the King or a treacherous member of the Spartoi royal family. The King of Spartax is a master manipulator making secrets alliances among Shi’ar, Skrulls, Kree and even double crossing the Avengers.

Nebula’s Pirates – Nebula (Karen Gillan) survived to come back for a hopefully expanded role in Guardians 2. Nebula would lead her own ruthless team of space pirates (Skunge, Kehl, Levan) in a blood war with her “father” Thanos. If Marvel was to launch Captain Marvel into a series, Nebula was make an excellent nemesis.

Howard the Duck – I heard the rumors. I spotted him in The Collector’s Menagerie early on Guardians but was still floored by the cinematic comeback of Howard the Duck in the post-credits sequence! Howard is a creation of the late Steve Gerber and Val Mayerik and came from Duckworld, an alternate Earth. Howard was pulled into our world and eventually starred in a 1986 film by Lucasfilm. Is this just an ultimate insider’s joke or is the Master of Quack-Fu ready for a big screen comeback?

Those the unusual suspects who could appear in Marvel’s next cosmic clashes. With the first official appearance of an Infinity Gem -it looks like the Marvel movies are on the road to a film based on The Infinity Gauntlet which could lead to even more cosmic heroes and villains and check out these aliens for your consideration perfect for the infinite Marvel Cinematic Universe.

As for what rock and roll classics will make the next soundtrack? How about  “Rollercoaster of Love” say what?” on the next Awesome Megamix.

Guardians of the Galaxy 2 arrives in July 2017.
