Guardians of the Galaxy opens next week. The success of this film could cinematic launch a more down to earth Marvel team.

Director James Gunn is on board for one more Marvel movie but it may not be Guardians 2.

It may be Thunderbolts?

“Thunderbolts? I will tell you, one time I was saying to Kevin [Feige], we were sitting on set together on one of the days he visited and I said, ‘You know, I really want to make Thunderbolts,’ and he said, ‘James, if Guardians does well you’ll be able to do whatever you want so we’ll see what happens,” Gunn told Screen Rant.

Which version could make it to the big screen?

Like the Guardians, the Thunderbolts have been though many rosters and twists on the concept.

The original team created by Kurt Busiek were villains posing as heroes in the wake of the “death” of the Avengers. Baron Zemo and his Masters of Evil were pretending to be heroes but some actually started to enjoy the spotlight and public adoration.

A later version of the team was made of villains working for the government as part of their punishment and reforming. Thunderbolts actually hunted Avengers and heroes who refused to sign on when the Superhero Registration Act was enacted.

Norman Osborn ran the covert team of government operatives made of bad guys. The most recent version did not work for the government. Red Hulk recruited a team of vigilantes and mercs including Punisher, Elektra and Deadpool to take on missions the more public heroes couldn’t.

The “Hero Hunters” government team could be a likely suspect if Marvel Studios decided to use the Civil War and Superhero Registration Act storylines for a future sequel.

Stay tuned.
