Gabriel Luna is the man in black who will burn up Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. Is he blazing a trail for more supernatural characters?
Reyes will burn into the action on Season Four of the hit series but will he be friend or foe of Team Coulson?
Here’s a first look at Luna as Robbie Reyes (first via EW) coming to Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. courtesy Marvel.com. Reyes transforms into the Ghost Rider, the Spirit of Vengeance.
This is a very different Ghost Rider from the one that hit the big screen. Johnny Blaze and Dan Ketch rode motorcycles but Reyes cruises for revenge in a black 1969 Dodge Charger. The L.A. teen will shift into the demonic spirit with a flaming skull. Reyes is nearly killed in drug deal gone wrong but he’s possessed by the evil spirit of his supernaturally powered uncle Eli, a Satanic serial killer.
With Ghost Rider blazing a trail on television and Doctor Strange hitting the big screen, the masterminds behind the Marvel Cinematic Universe are opening new doors into the supernatural dimensions of the Marvel Universe.
Given the comic book canon of Reyes, here are more heroes and villains we hope are conjured up:
Calvin Zabo/Mister Hyde (Kyle MacLachlan) could be rampaging back on the series. The tormented father of Daisy/Quake (Chloe Bennet) is a twisted scientist who became a monster thanks to his own drugs. In the comics Reyes is nearly killed by a drug dealing gang led by Hyde.
Johnny Blaze is the original Ghost Rider (once played by Nicolas Cage) who was a stunt motorcyclist who made a deal with the devil to save his father’s life. “Satan” bonded Blaze to rival demon Zarathos. If Reyes and Strange heat up the screens could they pave the way for a reboot of Blaze?
Mephisto is the demon who posed as the Devil himself to steal Blaze’s soul. Inspired by the Faust legend, Stan Lee and John Buscema co-created what some fans consider the ultimate supernatural villain in the Marvel Universe. Mephisto tricked Blaze, stole the soul of Doctor Doom’s mother, advised Thanos (seen in Avengers, Guardians of the Galaxy films) and tormented Hawkeye who was trying to save the soul of his wife Mockingbird aka Bobbie Morse.
Blackheart is the “son” of Mephisto who created his “child” from accumulated evil. Blackheart actually has a “change of heart” and is impressed by humanity’s free will after a series of temptation tests. His father banishes him to Earth. Blackheart (co-created by Ann Noceni and John Romita, Jr) first appeared in Daredevil and plagued The Man Without Fear and Spider-Man before becoming a long running Ghost Rider foe making him a villain who could connect Marvel’s street level and supernatural heroes on both screens.
Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. returns September 20th at 10 pm on ABC.
An All-New Ghost Rider comic book arrives in November.
