Geek Guide to SIFF

SIFF   You may scratch your heads with a film based on a Shakespeare being recommended by comic book geeks for geeks but this is Shakespeare by JOSS WHEDON!

The director/writer of Marvel’s The Avengers decided to shoot a film of Much Ado About Nothing in his backyard and invite a few actors you have may heard of like Nathan Fillion, Amy Acker, Alexis Denisof and Clark Gregg!

Yes, the stars of beloved shows and films like Firefly, Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Angel and The Avengers star in the Opening Night of the Seattle International Film Festival! Whedon, Denisof, Gregg, Acker and more stars from the film are coming to the Emerald City to appear at the Opening Night Gala on May 16th.

Here are some other geek-friendly picks among this year’s incredible roster of movies Seattle International Film Festival:

Phase IV Cosmically irradiated ants wreak havoc in the desert! How’s that for sci-fi horror? This is the only feature-length film directed by the legendary Oscar®-winning graphic designer Saul Bass. Bass worked with Alfred Hitchcock, Martin Scorcese and Stanley Kubrick! This special presentation of a brand new 35mm print from the Academy Film Archive includes Bass’s original psychedelic ending sequence, long thought lost. It plays June 9th.

Byzantium Vampires! Neil Jordan (Interview With the Vampire, The Crying Game) creates a female twist on the undead genre. Gemma Arterton (Quantum of Solace, Clash of the Titans, Hansel and Gretel Witch Hunters) and  Saorise Ronan (The Host ) and Caleb Landry Jones (X-Men: First Class) star.

Cockneys vs. Zombies Oh the horror and humor when the undead invade East London! Teens and senior citizens team up to mow down zombies!

Dead Meat Walking: A Zombie Walk Documentary looks at our obsession with the undead featuring Night of the Living Dead make-up guru and actor Tom Savini, Norman Reedus of The Walking Dead and the ordinary people who have joined the worldwide zombie walk phenonemon.

Epic A 3-D fantasy adventure featuring the voices of Amanda Seyfriend and Christoph Waltz based on the William Joyce novel, The Leaf Men.

The Deep I am obsessed with disaster at sea films so I’m excited for this film from Iceland “based on an astonishing true incident, The Deep fashions a modern-day everyman myth about the sole survivor of a shipwreck, whose superhuman will to survive made him both an inexplicable scientific phenomenon and a national hero.”

Kyle MacLachlan The Washington native will be celebrated in a special tribute to his amazing career (Dune, Twin Peaks, Blue Velvet, Portlandia) on June 3rd at the historic SIFF Cinema Uptown followed by a big screen presentation of the pilot of Twin Peeks.
