Friday Flashback X-Men Ladies Night

Kitty Pryde, Magik, the Stepford Cuckoos and Tempus just want to have fun, be human and not just mutants training or fighting the next big enemy. It doesn’t take much to convince Emma Frost to get approval for a Girls Night Out. The X-Women are soon caught up in Inhumanity as their London shopping excursion is interrupted by the birth of a new Inhuman.

Inspired by the wonderful Uncanny X-Men #15 this week by Brian Michael Bendis and guest artist Kris Anka I want to Friday Flashback to a classic and humorous issue with a similar X-Men “Girls Night Out” theme.

This week’s issue followed the epic crossover Battle of the Atom so they really needed a break. This week’s Flashback issue is Uncanny X-Men #244 (volume one) picking up right after Inferno. Storm, Rogue, Dazzler and a pre-ninja Psylocke needed a night out after a demon invasion and Mister Sinister.

Back then there was just one X-Men team and they were based on the Australian Outback. A teen mall rat attracts the attention of management in a Los Angeles mall because of her unusual power to create fireworks. Yes, this is the introduction of Jubilee! This issue by comic book legends Chris Claremont and Marc Silvestri also introduced the M-Squad – mutant hunting scientists.

The X-Women are on a much needed break enjoying a Ladies Night in L.A. but are soon to rescue of future X-woman Jubilation Lee on the run from M-Squad. While I love the fights and multiple issue arcs sometimes these “breather” issues remind us of why we really love the X-Men – they’re great characters who can be humorous and human.
