For this week’s Friday Flashback I’m inspired by Infinity #1 out next week.
The Avengers will fight the mysterious Builders and Thanos in a two-front war. The cosmic clash will rumble across the Marvel Universe and I couldn’t help but think of a cosmic force that once wiped out Earth’s Mightiest Heroes in their own headquarters!
My first Avengers issue freaked me out as a kid because just look at the cover! And then you start reading inside! I was a little kid but imagine my horror as the good guys kept getting killed.
Avengers #177 by was the explosive finale of the Korvac Saga. After a series of tragic events a cyborg from an alternate future was endowed with the Power Cosmic. Korvac came to Earth to reshape it into a utopia but was opposed by the combined powers of the Avengers (which has a HUGE roster at the time) and the classic version of the Guardians of the Galaxy. Korvac slaughtered hero after hero before finally taking his own life. Most of the Avengers recovered
As an adults I’ve gone back and re-read the entire epic by legends like Jim Shooter and David Micheline. If you’re enjoying Jonathan Hickman’s current cosmic themed storylines with a huge roster then flash back to the 1970’s for this opus.
