Free Comic Book Day is almost here! This unofficial geek holiday is Christmas in Springtime at local comic book shops.
The first Saturday in May is when you can pick up FREE comic books. It’s the industry’s way of saying thank you to longtime fans and the “brick and mortar” neighborhood stores like Zanadu Comics in downtown Seattle.
Curious about comics? Love superhero movies but have unanswered questions? Want to read new adventures of your favorites toys or video games?
FCBD is a perfect opportunity to see the stories behind the biggest movies and television shows. Entire families pack up to pick up their freebies. Here’s what you need to know before you go:
You can find participating stores here on the FCBD site by entering your zip code. Different shops have different rules. For example, some stores may have a limit. You can always call ahead or check via a store’s social media.
Just because they’re free doesn’t mean they’re just extra unsold copies! Major publishers feature their biggest heroes in brand new stories. Guardians of the Galaxy and Wonder Woman are hitting the big screen this summer but you can see their adventures in NCBD. Before Daredevil, Iron Fist, Jessica Jones and Luke Cage unite on Netflix you can see a sneak peek of the Defenders in a NCBD issue. Riverdale is new hit show based on Archie Comics. Betty & Veronica bring their Riverdale rivalry to headline their own FBD issue.
Even if you’re not a fan of costumes crusaders you can find comics starring Barbie, The Simpsons, Doctor Who, the Star Trek crew and more.
The FCBD Selection Committee chose 50 titles overall–12 Gold Sponsor comics and 38 Silver Sponsor comics–to give fans a wide range of stories from which to choose and discover new genres and publishers.
“We’re thrilled to see the range of titles with this year’s Free Comic Book Day,” said Free Comic Book Day spokesperson Michael Moccio. “Free Comic Book Day is one of the most celebrated days in the industry. When so many people introduce family and friends to comics and their local comic shop for the first time, it’s important the titles reflect that varied interests of people coming to stores. We believe this is going to be one of the best Free Comic Book Days yet and we’re excited for everyone to experience it!”
