The X-Men franchise could mutate into a new television series.

Fox Executives Gary Newman and Dana Walden confirm they’re into talks to develop an X-Men television series spinning off the popular film franchise according to TV Insider.

Twentieth Century Fox controls the film rights to the X-Men. Marvel controls the right to the comic characters which is part of Disney. According to the story Fox would need Disney/Marvel’s approval to move ahead with a television series.

“It’s in negotiations,” Newman said. “We’re cautiously optimistic, we had a good meeting with them. That will not be on a fast track creatively. This is just the deal, now we have to find the creative.”

Fox is planning X-Men: Apocalypse, a Gambit film starring Channing Tatum and a long-awaited Deadpool spinoff starring Ryan Reynolds all for 2016. There have been rumors of another Wolverine film starring Hugh Jackman and a spinoff X-Force film.

Director Bryan Singer recently revealed three young actors will play younger versions of Cyclops, Jean Grey and Storm in X-Men: Apocalypse.
