The young Scott Summers goes on a solo mission of hope and heartbreak and runs into one of the greatest X-Men’s greatest enemies he hasn’t fought yet in this week’s All-New X-Men #7.
Mystique smells fresh blood and never misses an opportunity to manipulate. The shapeshifter targets Cyclops with unexpected results. There are moments when you think the innocence of the boy who will become Cyclops might just charm Raven. That’s the beauty of Brian Michael Bendis’s storytelling. Bringing the past into the present has infused the X-Men family with fresh energy and emotion. Don’t tell me you didn’t choke up on that final page. Bendis goes right for the heart capturing everything I’ve ever loved about this socially relevant, action packed drama.
I love David Marquez’s art. He just captures the wide-eyed innocence of the young X-Men as they try to understand the future they never expected. Marquez can go from the sweet heartbreak in Jean Grey’s eyes to the ferocity Wolverine is trying to keep in check.
The Mystique, Scott and Jean storyline is the heart but the Kitty and Iceman scenes add the perfect touch of humor in another excellent chapter. Bendis is ON!
