Heroes fall and rise again.
Heroes die and live again.
Especially with the X-Men.
In the new Extraordinary X-Men by Jeff Lemire and Humberto Ramos, Storm is alone at the top as the mutant race faces a deadly new threat or is she?
The Terrigen Mists igniting the Inhuman race are killing mutantkind. Ororo is rescuing mutants from the Mists and giving them sanctuary in X-Haven and rebuilding X-Men.
A new genetic threat, tension with the Inhumans because of Cyclops, old enemies (Mister Sinister and demons) striking, Storm is being tested like never before but does she have help from beyond?
Is a beloved X-Men character pushing Storm and is a resurrection on the way?
Before we continue here’s a…
SPOILER ALERT!
If you have not ready Extraordinary X-Men #1-3 yet stop reading now.
Seriously.
OK.
Here it comes.
In the first issue Storm is in the headmaster’s chair very troubled and pondering her next move as mutants face extinction again. The panel cuts to Professor X as she asks him if she’s doing the right thing then Iceman enters the room and we assume it was a vision although I thought it was a painting of the founder.
In this week’s issue Storm falls in battle after X-Haven is invaded by a legion of relentless demons of Limbo. An unconscious Storm then hears, “you must get up, Ororo,”
The fallen leader sees a vision of Professor X in a wheelchair in the flames of Limbo then a panel of him close up with fingers to temple encouraging her to “get up and FIGHT.”
Storm rallies and unleashes her lightning, taking out a horde of demons and rallying her fellow mutants with the classic call, “To Me, My X-Men!”
Extraordinary X-Men is clearly an Ororo showcase for Storm fans and you can sense Lemire’s love for the character.
But what about Ororo’s visions of her mentor?
Is Professor Charles Xavier alive?
We all know Cyclops (while possessed by the Phoenix) killed the Professor in Avengers vs. X-Men. In the shock inducing Uncanny Avengers #1 Red Skull stole the Professor’s body, carved out his brain and was able to steal his telepathic powers.
Professor X’s soul is in Limbo? It was revealed in issue 2 that X-Haven is actually the school but transported to Limbo and under a protection/force field spell by Magik. When Illyana falls in a fight with Mister Sinister, the spell breaks and the demons attack. Limbo is a pocket universe of demons and supernatural power where Magik was raised. Could it be that Xavier’s soul has been trapped here and the arrival of X-Haven and Storm’s need for help is awakening his soul?
Professor X’s restless spirit wants to escape Heaven? You may remember Xavier’s spirit was seen with Nightcrawler’s in the Heaven dimension when Azazel invades during Amazing X-Men by Jason Aaron. If Kurt Wagner can return maybe his teacher can?
Professor X’s essence is in a clone? Remember way back in the first Brood Saga, Xavier was infected with one of the alien eggs and his body was destroyed but his soul was part into a new body cloned from his own uninfected tissues thanks to the Shi’ar and Starjammers. The new cloned body allowed Charles to walk again. Could Xavier’s soul have been downloaded into a new body?
Professor X is a clone created by Mister Sinister? The evil scientific genius is infamous for manipulating the bloodlines of Cyclops and Jean Grey but also the Professor’s early childhood. It was revealed the a young Charles was a test subject in the Black Womb Project of Nathan Milbury (an alias of Sinister) thanks to Xavier’s father.
Are the visions of the Professor from another telepath like Emma Frost or an Inhuman?
Cyclops and Wolverine are dead, Emma Frost is missing and Storm is the only veteran X-leader against an horrific new genetic threat and possible war with the Inhumans. Is Ororo having visions or is Professor X giving her the strength from beyond the grave, the astral plane or some other limbo?
Is the X-Men creative team plotting a resurrection in 2016?
Would you want to see Professor Xavier return from the dead?
