EMP Museum will stage a new science fiction exhibition set on board an interactive spacecraft. It’s the latest innovation from Seattle’s Music, Sci-Fi and Pop Culture Museum.
Opening in March 2015: Infinite Worlds of Science Fiction takes visitors on an intergalactic journey and showcases rare artifacts from iconic sci-fi productions.
EMP Museum announced today the opening of a new science fiction exhibition that will take visitors on a fully immersive journey to the farthest reaches of the universe. Organized by EMP, Infinite Worlds of Science Fiction will feature more than 150 artifacts from iconic films and television shows including Back to the Future, Aliens, Ghostbusters, Blade Runner, Dune, Star Trek, Star Wars, Battlestar Galactica, Terminator, Mars Attacks, and many others.
In addition to featuring authentic objects from some of sci-fi’s most groundbreaking creations, the 3500 square ft. gallery will be transformed into an interactive space ark where visitors can embark on their own intergalactic adventure, discover an alien civilization, scout for new worlds to explore from the ship’s cockpit, and investigate alternate universes. Curated by EMP’s Brooks Peck, Infinite Worlds of Science Fiction opens March 28, 2015.
“Infinite Worlds takes the form of a mechanized, alien spacecraft that has been exploring the galaxy for thousands of years. Along the way it has gathered weird and interesting costumes, tools and other objects from a number of alien civilizations,” says Brooks Peck, Curator, EMP. “Now the ship has come to Earth and invited us to come on board. It’s a bit like a Borg cube combined with Storage Wars.”
Over 150 rare artifacts spanning more than a century of science fiction will be featured illustrating the wide breadth of the genre, the creative range in storytelling, and the unlimited imagination that spawns fictional worlds. Objects include:
· A trio of hoverboards from Back to the Future II
· Proton pack and ghost trap from Ghostbusters
· Sandworm head and pistols from Dune
· Luke Skywalker and Darth Maul’s hero light sabers from Star Wars and The Phantom Menace
· Klingon robes and weapons from Star Trek: Deep Space Nine
· Egg from Alien: Resurrection
· Viper flight suit, helmet and Six’s red dress from the re-imagined Battlestar Galactica series
· Full scale T-800 endoskeleton from Terminator 2
· Stop-motion Martian, snow globe, and laser pistol from Mars Attacks!
The exhibit will also contain original short films featuring new and archived oral history interviews with some of sci-fi’s greatest luminaries. The films provide a behind-the-scenes look at the creative process and include interviews with artists, directors, authors and actors including George Lucas, Anne McCaffrey, James Cameron, Ronald Moore, and Jane Espenson.
In addition to objects on display, the exhibition presents a number of hands-on, interactive experiences.
– Visitors can fly a scout ship and seek out new worlds for the space ark to explore. They can name their discoveries and take a commemorative photo of themselves in the scout ship orbiting the new-found planet.
– Using a working pneumatic tube transport system, visitors can exchange messages and work together to decode the strange alien language found throughout the exhibition.
– The space ark houses a digital library containing deep data about science fiction in other media such as video games, manga, anime, pop art, and advertising.
– Young visitors can climb to an upper observation deck where they will discover more of the enigmatic space ark’s secrets.
EMP is currently the home of Game of Thrones: Ascend the Wall exhibit and a new Star Wars Costume exhibit will premiere at EMP next year.
