The final fight of Wolverine, a brand new Storm ongoing, Cyclops solo and more X-Men news at Marvel’s Wolverine: 3 Months To Die panel at Chicago Entertainment and Comic Expo.
X-Men Executive Editor Mike Marts explained 3 Months to Die will be in issues Wolverine #8- 12 by Paul Cornell, Kris Anka and Pete Woods.
“This is the lead up to the big event the death of Wolverine. The story of Wolverine losing his healing factor started three months back and it’s incredible,” said Marts.
Death of Wolverine is the follow up by Charles Soule (Inhuman, She-Hulk, Thunderbolts) and Steve McNiven.
“The book is about the way Logan approaches the idea of his own mortality,” said Soule, “If he gets a black eye, it’s not just going to disappear. Things are going to happen to him that he can’t quite recover from.”
“He is not sitting down, doing yoga, meditating on his own mortality. It’s an extremely fast paced story and he’s fighting every step of the way. I guess he’ll find out what happens to him when he gets there just like the rest of us,” added Soule.
Ororo has stepped up as headmistress of the Jean Grey School following Logan’s departure in the the series by Jason Latour and Mahmud Asrar.
“The one thing Storm has never dealt with us teaching kids. If you’ve ever dealt with kids you’re only as good as what you’ve done for them. So as much as we’ll be dealing with Wolverine’s tragic inevitability of his life, now he’s starting to question what he’s going to be leaving behind,” said Latour.
“The Jean Grey school was Wolverine’s ultimate legacy. But what is he really leaving behind? What kind of impact is Logan’s grave going to have with these kids? Our second arc is Wolverine trying to put his house in order,” he added.
Wolverine and the X-Men #6 will introduce a new Horseman of Death for Apocalypse – a woman.
A World Without Wolverine is the tagline for the X-books starting in September.
“We’re not announcing the projects that follow the Death of Wolverine, but we will have multiple projects. It’s as much of a beginning as it is an ending,” said Marts.
A brand new Storm series by Greg Pak and artist Victor Ibanez is coming in July.
“When I was a kid Storm was a super hero that I’d never seen before. Not only was she groundbreaking in terms of diversity, the character herself is just tremendous. She loves “making it rain” but still has a deep empathy,” said Pak.
“It’s a solo series but we have an opportunity to see her do things that you wouldn’t necessarily see her do things in an X-Men book.”
“She’s seen the highs and the lows and many different people look up to her. There’s things the average people wouldn’t notice that she will notice. If somebody tells Storm that she can’t go some place, she’s going to go to that place. So she’s going to go where she’s needed.”
Young Scott Summers will blast off into a new adventures with his father and the Starjammers in Cyclops #1 by Greg Rucka.
“It’s a space opera. Crazy aliens and space ships but you’re also getting great insight into the father – son relationship. It’s a really fun, fun book,” said artist Russell Dauterman.
Amazing X-Men #7 is by Kathryn Immonen and Paco Medina and called Spider-Man & His Amazing Friends story – hinting at the classic cartoon starring Spidey, Firestar and Iceman.
Amazing X-Men #8 kicks off a 5-issue arc called World War Wendigo by new team Craig Kyle, Chris Yost, Ed McGuinness and Carlo Barberi. Colossus will rejoin the cast with this story. Alpha Flight and X-23 will appear in the story.
Deadpool vs. X-Force by Duane Swiercynsky and Pepe Larraz takes place in the 90’s era.
The next big thing from Marvel is coming Fall 2014 and it’s called AXIS. The onscreen image featured the “A” in Avengers logo style and “X” in X-Men logo style.
