Deadpool is ready to kill it with fans and critics. Fox’s new Marvel film is a risk-taker with extreme violence, dark humor in a meta packed flick that exists in the X-Men movie universe but unlike any X-movie you’ve seen before.
Could Wade Wilson’s new adventure by director Tim Miller slash the creative strings and inspire even wilder superhero films starring other unorthodox anti-heroes?
If The Merc With a Mouth can survive an earlier first appearance, go back to his comic book roots and live to kill again then maybe these other characters can leap to the big screen.
Here are four unconventional heroes ready to follow Deadpool down the unconventional road to the big screen:
Midnighter
Imagine a hybrid of Batman, The Punisher and Wolverine but he’s openly gay and a sadist. Created by Warren Ellis and Bryan Hitch, Midnighter and Apollo were secret “black ops” agents recruited to the Stormwatch team then The Authority.
Midnighter (presumed name Lucas Trent) possesses the ability to anticipate his opponent’s movements, pain suppression and other enhanced physical abilities. The character is now single, starring in his own solo series by Steve Orlando and hunting down an arsenal of weapons stolen from the “God Garden” that’s pitting him against Suicide Squad.
Incredible fighting prowess, a love of violence and killing plus sexual swagger make Midnighter an edgy anti-hero. Midnighter could be DC’s “Deadpool” but with a darker, less wacky wit, more sex, and no mercy for the bad guys.
Secret Six
Six bad guys or girls on a dubious mission for a secret mystery boss always named Mockingbird. The team concept has been around since the Silver Age but Hollywood should go right for Gail Simone’s acclaimed version of the slick squad who infiltrated the Secret Society of Super Villains and took on Lex Luthor. Simone turned Batman B-villain Catman into a ruthless warrior with a sense of honor. Add lethal assassin Cheshire and warrior/lovers Scandal Savage (daughter of Vandal) and Knockout (her superstrong Female Fury girlfriend) and you have a sexy squad to morally challenged rogues.
Loki, Agent of Asgard
Can the villainous God of Lies be the hero? In the comics Thor’s scheming half-brother has been reincarnated as a woman, a kid who joined the Young Avengers and a young man again.
Without a doubt, Tom Hiddleston has the charisma and star power to headline his own spinoff.
Why not use Al Ewing’s limited series as inspiration. In Loki: Agent of Asgard, the master of deception used his skills as a cosmic spy. On a mission for the All-Mother, Loki traveled across time and space in search of five keys which would lead to a mystical sword Odin forged for him…if he be worthy. The Prince of Lies encounters a human woman with the ability to know if she’s being lied to, fellow Asgardian Lorelei and a mystery villain from the future in a cosmic, omnisexual James Bond style adventure.
She-Hulk
Sexy, strong, smart – Jennifer Walters makes green fabulous and fun! Bruce Banner’s cousin received a blood transfusion which turned her into a green giantess but she kept her intellect and emotional control. But if you make Jen make angry, her rage increases her strength. She-Hulk has been an Avenger, member of the Fantastic Four and legal counsel for several super heroes.
In Sensational She-Hulk by John Byrne Jen broke the fourth wall in a hilarious metafictional awareness even arguing with Byrne and complaining the the book’s editor.
Jen is an inspiring career woman with a moral center who fights for the downtrodden and superheroes, a sense of humor and self-awareness as a Hulk, a need for acceptance and independence that leads to romantic relationships and freedom fighting partnerships.
She-Hulk, guilty of being a sexy fun adventurer fighting for justice in the courtroom, streets, spaceships or anywhere a bad guy needs smashing!
