The first Guardians of the Galaxy trailer debuts during Jimmy Kimmel Live Tuesday night and Marvel revealed more about the plot in a USA Today story.
Chris Pratt is Peter Quill – the human who will become known as Star-Lord. Zoe Saldana is the green-skinned alien, Gamora. Dave Bautista is Drax. Bradley Cooper is the voice of Rocket Raccoon. Vin Diesel is the voice of Groot, the living tree. The team of unlikely heroes unites in a space prison and will become part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe – including Thanos – last seen in The Avengers.
“Being stuck in space with no accountability makes for a strange combination of youthful vibrancy and cluelessness in a childlike man,” Pratt tells USA Today.
“He does some things that most people wouldn’t get away with. But part of his arc is being willing to essentially sacrifice himself for the greater good of other people.”
Guardians of the Galaxy is set in the far reaches of the Marvel Universe and Pratt says shakes up what the audience expects from Marvel super hero movies.
“They know what to expect at every turn. So that’s why it’s important now to do a comic-book movie that no one’s ever seen before.”
Here’s what the story confirmed:
The rogue team first meets on the prison world of Kyln.
The Milano is their spaceship.
Peter Quill has an orb the villains Ronan (Lee Pace) and Nebula (Karen Gillan) are after.
The team will encounter The Collector, last seen in the post-credit scene in Thor: The Dark World.
The big question: Is Quill’s orb one of the Infinity Gems? These five stones of power can be fitted on a cosmic gauntlet (seen in Odin’s vault in Thor) giving the wearer absolute power over time and space. Thanos seized and wiped out half the universe in the classic comic book epic, The Infinity Gauntlet and what could be the basis for Avengers 3.
