Selina Kyle comes out!
In Catwoman #39 Selina kisses a woman confirming years of speculation that she might be attracted to men and women.
Selina retired her Catwoman persona and costume and took over the Calabrese crime family and the Gotham City Underworld.
In a scene from this week’s issue Selina confronts a new character named Eiko, who took the Catwoman identity without Selina’s consent. At the end of the scene they share a kiss.
It’s the latest change for the 75 year old DC Comics icon since new writer Genevieve Valentine took over the book. Valentine wrote on her blog:
“She’s flirted around it – often quite literally – for years now; for me, this wasn’t a revelation so much as a confirmation. And as Mark Doyle and I were first hashing out the relationships in this arc, Eiko seemed like the right person: intelligent, driven, in that uncanny valley of Almost Catwoman, and knows enough about Selina that their honesty has become something of a shelter in a situation that’s getting increasingly dishonest for everybody involved. The more we talked about it, the more it was something I wanted to make happen.”
As Valentine explains this is not just Selina playing a game. This is real attraction.
“I think Selina and Eiko have been drawn to each other from the beginning; I mean, the very first time we saw Eiko, she was keeping watch over Selina in a very pointed way!” Valentine told Comicosity.
“One born to the lifestyle, one who sort of kicks the door down and takes over, but both conflicted about their positions, both doing the best they can to navigate this incredibly tense situation. And while they’re both smart enough to realize the dangers of trusting anyone, they’ve been open with one another in a way they’re not open with anyone else.
It’s an odd trust, but sometimes that’s all you have, and I think it’s created a situation that they’ll definitely have to come to terms with together.”
While Selina explore her feelings for Eiko she must decide if she will go to war to keep control of Gotham as Valentine’s first arc wraps up.
