Batgirl Confronts The Killing Joke

Batgirl #7 cover preview courtesy DC Comics

Batman: The Killing Joke is one of the greatest Joker stories ever. Barbara Gordon’s life was shattered by the Clown Prince of Crime in Alan Moore’s landmark storyline.

Shot in the spine and paralyzed, Batgirl reinvented herself as Oracle and founded the Birds of Prey. In the DC New 52 reinvention, Barbara Gordon was not paralyzed by the Joker’s ambush and continues her career as Batgirl.

DC says fans will see a new side of that infamous encounter as Barbara faces her demons according to today’s preview for Batgirl #7in March 2012. Batgirl’s confronts the events of that fateful attack by the Joker and a new villain, Grotesque.

Gail Simone has delivered a thrilling return for fans of Barbara and this will be one of my ‘must read’ books.

Joshua Williamson is currently writing Voodoo for DC and known for Uncharted, JLA, Incredible Hulks, Superman/Batman and Zatanna.

Adam Warren is known for his Empowered original graphic novels and writing for the Dirty Pair franchise. I remember his writing on Gen 13 and X-Men.

Thom Zahler is the writer/artist/creator of Love and Capes and Buzz Boy.

Welcome all. ECCC is March 30-April 1, 2012.

Nick Spencer at Emerald City Comicon

Ultimate Comics X-Men #1 courtesy Marvel.com

Morning Glories creator Nick Spencer is coming back to Emerald City Comicon in 2012. I’m a huge fan of Spencer’s writing on Ultimate Comics: X-Men and Thunder Agents.

Last year at ECCC Marvel announced Spencer’s exclusivity with the publisher yet allowing him to continue on Morning Glories  and Thunder Agents. I think it was the first time a major publisher make a big announcement like that at our hometown con so I thought that was very cool.

Welcome back Nick, I’ve got some issues waiting for your autograph! Emerald City Comicon is March 30th-April 1st in Seattle.

Bond Girl’s New Movie Buzz

Hansel and Gretel: Witch Hunters courtesy Entertainment Weekly

The Bond girl who deserved so much more on-screen time in the last 007 movie is getting lots of media buzz for her upcoming roles.

Gemma Arterton was Agent “Strawberry” Fields in Quantum of Solace and Jeremy Renner will play Hawkeye in The Avengers. The two action star playing Hansel and Gretel: Witch Hunters. This is first look is a Entertainment Weekly Exclusive.

Please be careful (IN FACT, JUST STOP IF YOU’RE IN MOTION) when you open the stunning shots of Gemma on the set of Byzantium from The Daily Mail. Gemma is playing a vampire in the film by Director Neil Jordan.

Dark Knight Rises Rejection Reveals Spoiler?

Why would an actress turned down a role in The Dark Knight Rises? One young actress would prefer to keep her hair.

POTENTIAL SPOILER COMING!!! YOU MAY NOT WANT TO READ ANY FURTHER!!!

HERE IT COMES:

Dark Horizons (via The Surrey Comet) reports that 8-year-old actress Leila De Meza was offered the role of a young Talia Al Ghul but rejected the role because producers insisted she would have to shave all her hair off. Joey King is playing the role. We know that there are flashbacks of Talia’s father, Ra’s Al Ghul, who is played by Josh Pence.

Tales of the Demon cover courtesy Amazon

This supports my theory and hope that an adult Talia is the real villain behind Bane’s rampage. I have posted that Marion Cotillard (playing Miranda Tate of Wayne Enterprises could really be Talia. )

Astonishing Changes for Astonishing X-Men!

Astonishing X-Men #48 cover courtesy Marvel.com

Marjorie Liu and Mike Perkins are the next creative team on Astonishing X-Men starting with issue #48. Marvel announced the changes today in their Next Big Thing presser. This will be Liu’s first official team book. The lineup is Wolverine, Warbird, Northstar, Gambit, Iceman, Cecelia Reyes and Karma.

“We’ve got Northstar moving back to New York and he’s going to be living with his boyfriend, Kyle,” Liu said. “Another side of it, we’ve got characters like Cecelia and Gambit circling each other and [Gambit] moving into his own apartment in Westchester.”

Liu’s first issue will settle in the team and introduce the villains, the Marauders. Liu has added the Vanisher and Chimera to the Marauders, but did not comment on the rest of the current team line-up. The Marauders were last seen in Messiah Complex. Chimera was part of the Sisterhood of Evil Mutants. Vanisher was a uwilling member of X-Force. The Marauders have always worked for Mister Sinister but Liu confirmed Sinister will not be part of this storyline. No word on who is pulling the strings on this incarnation of the mutant mercenaries.

I’m excited to see Northstar back with the X-Men. You may have read my post on why Jean Paul should join Logan’s school. Seeing Cecilia and Karma on board is a thrill too. Warbird is a Shiar bodyguard to Kid Gladiator who just joined the Jean Grey School in Wolverine and the X-Men.

I’m a huge fan of Liu’s previous work on NYX: No Way Home, X-23 and Daken: Dark Wolverine and I’m eager to read what she will do with a larger cast in a new corner of the X-Men universe.

Black Widow Solo Movie?

Scarlett Johansson and Jeremy Renner on sete in The Avengers courtesy Marvel.com

Scarlett Johansson returns as Black Widow in The Avengers movie in May, 2012 and says she’s ready to go back in black for a solo movie.

“I love playing the Widow. I think she’s got a very interesting past, a lot of storylines to explore, and certainly Kevin (Feige) loves that character,” she told us when asked about a possible spin-off.  “I think that Marvel has a very personal relationship with their fans, and I think if the fans want it, and the audience wants it, nothing’s impossible. I would love to explore that option as well. Like I said, I love the character and it would be nice to see something nice and gritty” Johansson told SuperHeroHype.

Black Widow: Deadly Origin cover courtesy Marvel.com

Black Widow is a KGB assassin turned SHIELD operative and quickly became Nick Fury’s top field agent. Natasha has been with the Avengers, Champions, Defenders, Thunderbolts and Secret Avengers – that resume alone makes her character worthy of solo screen time.

Natasha has quite a love life with romantic partnerships with Iron Man, Hawkeye, Daredevil and Bucky Barnes (the former Captain America and Winter Soldier.)

A possible enemy for a Black Widow solo movie would be Yelena Belova – the second Black Widow. Yelena followed the same path as Natasha until an attack left her disfigured. She was then recruited by the modern day Hydra (Red Skull’s criminal group from the Captain America movie) and given super powers.

Black Widow and The Winter Soldier from the cover of Captain America and Bucky #624 courtesy Marvel.com

No word on if Scarlett Johansson will appear in Iron Man 3. I’m hoping Captain America 2 will be set in the modern day and be based on the Winter Soldier epic which prominently features Black Widow working with Steve Rogers and eventually falling for the back from the dead Bucky. Natasha and Bucky have the best chemistry. Both are deadly, hot and thankfully good guys now.

What do you think? Black Widow solo? Black Widow in Iron Man 3 or Captain America 2?
