Best Mix of Marvel Mythology in one movie while still keeping it accessible: Captain America: The First Avenger

Honorary Award: James McAvoy as Professor Charles Xavier. Michael Fassbender received most of the praise but he had the more demanding role. Everyone roots for the anti-hero. Xavier was the optimistic, steady yin to Erik’s passionate, revenge driven yang.  Xavier is the mentor to the other characters and McAvoy was the rock for the rest of the cast.

Tom Hiddleston as Loki & Chris Hemsworth as Thor in Thor courtesy Marvel

Honorary Award: Kenneth Branaugh! I had serious doubts about making Norse Gods, Asgard, and the Nine Realms accessible and enjoyable but he pulled it off beautifully. His Shakespearean background was perfect to infuse the Odin, Thor, Loki conflict with power and drama.

A stellar year for Marvel superhero fans at the box-office. Great action, inspiration, and emotion. Thanks to all the creators and actors who accepted the challenge of bringing our heroes to the big screen.

4 Minutes on Mars With John Carter!

Taylor Kitsch and Lynn Collins in Disney's John Carter

Somewhere up in Heaven I think Edgar Rice Burroughs is smiling or cheerig. Here’s 4 minutes of Disney’s John Carter based on the first John Carter novel A Princess of Mars. I think director Andrew Stanton has done it! Bring on the Tharks!

I can’t believe we’ve had so many version of Tarzan and this is the first John Carter…hopefully it’s just the beginning! See you on Barsoom in March! Thanks to Twitchfilm. I suggest you check their more expanded review.

Super Teen Fighting Cancer Gets a Date With Taylor Swift

A teen fighting cancer asked Taylor Swift to be his date for the prom. The country superstar can’t make it but she asked Kevin McGuire to be her date for the Academy of Country Music Awards.

Take a look at this heroic profile from ABC7 in Philadelphia and let’s talk about the possible comic book connection:

You can’t help but notice the Superman blanket! I wonder if he’s a comic fan. Regardless, Kevin is a real hero and inspiration.

My friend Carol is a huge country music fan. She knows I’m a big comic book super hero fan. Sometimes you need a story like this to remind of what’s important in life. So we both wanted to share this inspiring story and wish Kevin a full recovery and great time on his date with Taylor!

John Carter Back to Mars

While Taylor Kitsch has been talking about a possible sequel to Disney’s John Carter, Marvel is taking John back to Mars in a new 5 part comic book series. Sam Humphries and Ramon Perez are the creative team on John Carter: The Gods of Mars.

This new series takes John back to Barsoom in the world created by the great Edgar Rice Burroughs. Marvel gave Comics Newsarama a first look at the several pages. I wanted to share this cool page of the hero using the enhanced powers. Like Superman is powered by the yellow sun, John’s body gets powers from Mars.

Here’s an earlier post with Humphries talking about how this series picks up a decade after events in the movie.

Emerald City Comicon Exclusive Prints

Emerald City Comicon Exclusive by Alex Ross courtesy Emerald City Comicon

Emerald City Comicon revealed two stunning images featuring Seattle’s most stunning icon! These are exclusive prints for ECCC’s 10th anniversary. Alex Ross created a beautiful image starring the ECCC Crusaderette flying by the Space Needle. Jeremy Haun features The Darkness on top of the icon watching the Emerald City.

Yours truly works across from the Space Needle and way back in 1999 I was on the very tip-top with KOMO 4 News Anchor and Super Guy Dan Lewis on a production shoot. KOMO 4 is in Fisher Plaza right across the street from the Space Needle and doubles as Seattle Grace Hospital on Grey’s Anatomy.

Emerald City Comicon is March 30th-April 1st. April 21st is the 50th anniversary of the Space Needle and the Seattle World’s Fair. If you’re visting for ECCC you must include a trip up to the Space Needle while you’re in Seattle.

Kitty Pryde’s Pregnancy and Wolverine’s Gamble

An adventure in inner space and outer space for the students and staff of the Jean Grey School. Jason Aaron and Nick Bradshaw turn the joyride up several notches in Wolverine and the X-Men #6.

Kitty Pryde’s mystery pregnancy is revealed. Beast and Rachel are inside the headmistress giving some students the most bizarre biology class/field trip in comic book history! Kitty’s condition is connected to my favorite new character Broo. Kitty’s body is under attack and now the entire school is invaded.

Odd couple Wolverine and Quentin Quire are in outer space trying to beat the house at an intergalactic casino that Jabba the Hutt would frequent. The duo hopes to win enough money to save the school.

Aaron is a masterful at keeping the drama, action and tension high yet still keeping it brisk with moments of humor that fit perfectly. I’ve said before how Bradshaw reminds me of Art Adams. I was tremendously impressed by the detail on the variety of alien races inside the space casino and the Brood back at the school. I enjoyed this book from cover to cover. It’s the most fun I’ve had with a superhero comic.

Thanks to Dark Horizons. See you at the Pacific Science Center IMAX in Seattle this November!

Edgar Wright & Johnny Depp on The Night Stalker

Darren McGavin as Kolchak: The Night Stalker

I stayed up way past my bedtime and was scared out of my little kid mind by The Night Stalker. Darren McGavin played tabloid reporter Carl Kolchak in the 1970’s ABC series. Director Edgar Wright (Shaun of the Dead) will direct Johnny Depp in a big screen version for Disney according to Deadline.

The reporter covered the crime beat for a tabloid and encountered werewolves, vampires, aliens and zombies. An episode with a monster that sucked the salt of its victims was the one that really freaked me out.

Kolchak appeared in two made for tv movies and then the series only last one year but what an impact. The series is often credited as the inspiration for The X-Files. In fact McGavin played the founder of the X-Files in a few episodes. ABC attempted a reboot of the series in 2006.

This Geek’s Opinion: Johnny Depp is a perfect actor to inherit the role made famous by the great Darren McGavin. Wright’s track record of horror and humor makes him perfect for the occult cases of Kolchak! After looking at the old show opening I almost hope they set the new movie in the 70’s.
