Batman “Night of the Owls” is Here!

Attack on Wayne Manor. Night of the Owls begins in Batman #8. First one, then another, then waves of relentless Talons invade Bruce Wayne’s refuge. Like a creepy hybrid of Aliens and (fast) Zombies from the Dawn of the Dead remake, the assassins keep attacking.

Scott Snyder and Greg Capullo create a tension filled masterpiece with this issue as those owl eyes appear and Bruce must fight his way through a relentless series of attacks by the ruthless killers Alfred’s brief moment of glory against the invaders is short-lived as he discovers the horrible truth of what’s in store for Gotham City.

Nightwing #8 picks up the action as more Talons target Gotham City and Batman’s allies try to stop assassinations. Kyle Higgins and Eddy Barrows take the ball (or maybe the blade would be a better choice for this story) and run with two stories. One in Gotham’s past and one in the present as Dick Grayson endures brutal, bloody showdown with a Talon tied to Dick’s haunted family history.

Night of the Owls is off to a thrilling start. This crossover may be the cure of event fagitue!

Batman “Night of the Owls” Back Story

Batman #9 courtesy DC Comics

The just released Batman #8 and Nightwing #8 are preludes to Night of the Owls crossover kicking off next month and across the Batman family of books. The Court of Owls unleash their army of Talons on Bruce Wayne, his allies and Gotham City.

James Tynion IV will co-write a back story in the titles exploring Gotham City’s history with the Court of Owls and secrets of Bruce Wayne’s ancestors. The up and coming writer talked with DC about the project.

“I could see the epic size and shape of the story as it began last September. I was devouring every issue waiting to see what might happen next. When Scott offered me the chance to help him build the mythology of the Court with the backups, and help launch “Night of the Owls,” how could I have ever said no? The Court and their Talons are my favorite additions to the Bat-Mythos in ages, with each of those awesome assassins offering a glimpse of Gotham’s history. We’re launching “Night of the Owls” this week in BATMAN #8, and using the back-up to lead right from the action of the feature into the other Bat-family titles with “The Call.” And with “The Fall of the House of Wayne,” Scott and I are exploring the pre-Alfred years at stately Wayne Manor, with some incredible art by Rafael Albuquerque. I can’t wait for everyone to check it out.”

I’ll be devouring the preludes tonight and I’m eagerly awaiting the crossover – especially all the Talons designed by the mighty Greg Capullo!

Seattle’s New Superheroes Debut in X-Factor

X-Factor #234 courtesy Marvel.com

I love Seattle. It’s been my home for 13+ years. We have great comic book stores, cafes and cons: Emerald City Comicon, Geek Girl Con and Jet City Comic Show. Ed Brubaker calls Seattle home so that makes us pretty cool too. Oh and we have a Troll eating a volkswagen under an overpass…seriously.

We already have a real life masked crime fighter named Phoenix Jones, leader of the Rain City Superhero Movement.

Peter David is giving us two new super heroes in this week’s X-Factor #234. Marvel’s solicitation for the issue “introduces Seattle’s new heroes: The Insignia and Shutterbug. (One of whom may not make it though the issue.)”

Will they be mutants? Does this mean X-Factor Investigations latest case will take the detectives to the Emerald City?

Update: A hilarious debut for Seattle hopeful heroes in a scene that’s a hybrid of The Big Bang Theory and Chronicle.

The teaser promises a catfight too. Monet and Layla have a showdown and a dead X-Factor member returns. I’m in!

New “Prometheus” Viral Video with Michael Fassbender’s Android

Michael Fassbender in Prometheus courtesy 20th Century Fox

A truly chilling performance by Michael Fassbender as the android David in a new faux commercial from Weyland Industries, the sinister company in Prometheus and the Alien films. Take a look – even if you think you’ve seen this, keep watching – especially the Rorschach looking symbols peppered in the spot.

Thanks to Digital Spy. Prometheus opens June 8. As I watch this I can’t help but think of Ian Holm telling the crew of the Nostromo the company’s orders in Alien.

As I watch this – I can’t help but also think of how perfect Michael Fassbender would be at the Vision in The Avengers.

A Geek’s Dream Come True!

ComicsBlend.com

I started ComicsBlend.com last November in time for my birthday after years of friends saying you should do something creative with your love of comics! This year at Emerald City Comicon it was my first time as a fan and a blogger! I had t-shirts made and on a whim I took one along with me as I asked for writer and artist autographs. I had my amazing shirt framed and it’s back! Thanks to all the creators I got to meet, the awesome crowd at ECCC for producing an amazing event and especially all the fans and friends of my blog!

Big thanks to Matt Fraction, Kelly Sue DeConnick, Ed Brubaker, Marc Silvestri, Gail Simone, Chris Burnham, Greg Capullo, Terry & Rachel Dodson, Joe Eisma, Adi Granov, Shane Houghton, Georges Jeanty, Robert Kirkman, David Mack, Clay Mann, Dustin Nguyen, Rick Remender, Sam Humphries, Phillip Tan, Dexter Vines, Dustin Weaver, Matt Whitlock and Christopher Yost.

What’s cooler than Iron Man? Iron Man blasting bad guys with rockets and lasers! Here’s a new pic from Marvel.com showing the Armored Avenger showing off some new Stark Tech! The Avengers opens May 3rd.

Invincible Iron Man #515 arrives in comic book stores this week with the ominous tease “a hero falls.”

Thor & Kid Loki Crossover- Updated

Thor & Kid Loki team up to save the Nine Realms from Surtur in Everything Burns a 7 part crossover between The Mighty Thor and Journey Into Mystery by Matt Fraction, Kieron Gillen, Alan Davis and Carmine di Giandomenico. Marvel revealed the story, cover and promotional art at C2E2.

Updated: The crossover will kick off this August in The Mighty Thor #18-#22 and Journey Into Mystery #642-#645.  Fraction and Gillen talked with Marvel.com about the event.

“It’s an epic,” Gillen says, explaining who will take on a prominent role in the story. “Thor and Loki are the heart of it all, but everyone else is the circulatory system around them, pumped full of fiery blood, ready to explode. Any significant player in JOURNEY INTO MYSTERY at least has a moment, and several are absolutely key.”

“This story is about asking the question ‘What can break the bonds of brotherhood?’” Fraction asserts. “How long can Thor stand at Loki’s side? How many angles can Loki play at once? What Thor and Loki share is inconceivable to everyone but themselves. So whatever breaks it would have to be beyond comprehension, right?”

New Gambit Solo Series

Gambit #1 courtesy Marvel

Marvel announced a new Gambit series by James Asmus (Captain America & Bucky, Generation Hope)and Clay Mann (X-Men Legacy) debuting this August.

“This story will break Gambit out into the larger Marvel Universe. We are trying to make it as accessible to new fans as well as everyone who loved Gambit in the past,” said Asmus.

Before he was a hero, Remy LeBeau was a master thief. Remy’s criminal past came back to haunt him – especially his connection to Mister Sinister and the Mutant Massacre.

“He’s one of the greatest thieves in the Marvel Universe,” Asmus continued and confirmed Rogue will play a part in the series.

Here’s the C2E2 Next Big Thing panel play by-play on Marvel.com.

This Geek’s Opinion: I’m a big fan of James Asmus and Clay Mann’s art. I love Gambit but as part of a team. Remy is currently part of X-Men Legacy, where’s a slow burning attraction building with Frenzy, and Astonishing X-Men. This new series is in the aftermath of AvX so who knows what twists and turns are coming for the mutants. I will definitely give it try.
