Catwoman’s Hour in The Night of the Owls

Ok DC Comics you’re winning. I was hooked on Batman, Detective Comics and Batgirl from the beginning of The New 52. Now Night of the Owls is making me addicted to the rest of the Batman family of books.

The Court of Owls has unleashed a nearly undead army of killers to take out key targets in a bid to seize control of Gotham City. Batman has called on his allies to help protect the hit list of citizens across the city. It’s a massive crossover and it made me pick up some titles I usually don’t. I loved the Batman and Robin, Batwing and Nightwing issues.

This week it’s Catwoman’s turn. Judd Winick and Guillem March won me over with a tightly paced and clever tie-in. This is the first chapter in which I felt a little sympathy for a devil…or in this case a Talon.

Catwoman and Spark are targeting the Penguin for a robbery. The Court of Owls have targeted Cobblepot for assassination. Winick gives us the back story of Talon haunted by an unresolved mission. The Council of Owls have demonstrated their ruthlessness but with this story we see just cruel the society can be to their most loyal servants.

Given her own past Selina is able to see something in the Talon perhaps no one else in the Batman family can see. There’s a weird sense of reflection and even understanding between the infamous femme fatale and the undead killer. A very different take in this crossover and it gave me enough of Selena and Spark to make me come back next month.

“Prometheus” Creature is “Every Woman’s Nightmare”

Secrets of Prometheus are unfolding like those slick eggs peeling away in Alien. The creature in the new film takes on four different forms as it grows and changes “organically” in what actress Noomi Rapace calls “every woman’s nightmare” according to an upcoming story in The Hollywood Reporter.

Do you remember seeing the international trailer? It featured a creature that reminded me of one of those things inside the belly of the monster in the asteroid on The Empire Strikes Back but a lot nastier.  What kind of cargo is that “Space Jockey” carrying?

Joss Whedon “Torn” About Directing Avengers 2

Marvel's The Avengers courtesy Marvel

He did it! Joss Whedon took 4 major movie franchises and married them into an amazing film that has won critical praise and soared past the 1 billion dollar mark. Will Joss Whedon re-assemble a sequel to The Avengers?

“You know, I’m very torn,” Whedon told The LA Times Hero Complex before the film’s U.S. opening. “It’s an enormous amount of work telling what is ultimately somebody else’s story, even though I feel like I did get to put myself into it. But at the same time, I have a bunch of ideas, and they all seem really cool.”

For the entire interview (I highly recommend this site too) here’s the Hero Complex link.

One of the many reason I love Whedon and loved The Avengers is his gift for writing and directing strong female characters – that’s why I named Black Widow my MVP.

Viral Video “Prometheus” Be Careful What You Ask For Doctor

Prometheus still of Noomi Rapace courtesy 20th Century Fox

Here’s a new viral video for Ridley Scott’s Prometheus. First came the Ted talk 2023 video with Guy Pearce as Peter Weyland then a creepy faux commercial for Michael Fassbender’s android David. Noomi Rapace as Dr. Elizabeth Shaw stars in the latest video Quiet Eye found on the Verizon FIOS facebook page. In the video Dr. Shaw is pleading her case to Peter Weyland.

Did you see the creep analyzing and the Yutani logo? It seems like in Prometheus Weyland and Yutani are separate companies.

Hulk TV Show

Marvel's Avengers The Hulk courtesy Marvel Studios

As I watched the ABC Up Front today I sighed (well I already got a presser so I knew) that there would not be a superhero show on the fall lineup. The ABC Network is not picking up a series AKA Jessica Jones based on Alias by Brian Michael Bendis and Michael Gaydos. The pilot featured Jessica, Luke Cage and references to Tony Stark.

A Hulk television series in still in development for the 2013 season said ABC Entertainment President Paul Lee. A Hulk project with Guierllmo Del Toro and David Eick was announced in 2012.

One show I was excited about was 666 Park Avenue starring Terry O’Quinn of Lost. My impression was you could call this a hybrid of The Shining, Needful Things and Rosemary’s Baby. The concept is a young couple is hired to be managers of an ritzy Manhattan apartment building owned by the Devil?

The Irony of Real and Comic Book Heroes in Seattle Plus Phoenix Jones Costume

X-Factor #236 courtesy Marvel

The mutant detectives of X-Factor Investigations are on the case in Seattle after someone starts killing the city’s so called real super heroes. Madrox and Shattershot went undercover with the X-ceptionals last month.

This week’s X-Factor #236 exposes the killer but this revelation brings up a ton of questions. This new foe named Scattershot looks awfully familiar. (Like a lot of villains from Rob Liefeld’s X-Force era.)

Peter David’s storyline has been fun and filled with mystery, action and humor. It’s ironic that comic book heroes are going undercover in Seattle to save people in comic books who are dressing and want to to be super heroes.

What you may or may not know is that Seattle (home of yours truly) actually has a real life super hero movement. Phoenix Jones is the most notable of these residents who patrol the streets in costume. I recently met the director who’s been on patrol with the Citizen Heroes for an upcoming documentary.

Every good hero inspires a villain. Enter Rex Velvet earlier this month. This self-proclaimed real life “People’s Villain” has released two stylish videos challenging Seattle’s heroes and appears to be planning a phase two of his campaign.

Maybe Peter David will take a look at Rex’s videos. I’d be fascinated if it inspires a new twist or sequel to this current X-Factor storyline.

As I wrote this I learned Phoenix Jones is looking to upgrade his costume. He asked for suggestions from followers via his Twitter.

Avengers vs X-Men Changes the Marvel Universe

Avengers vs X-Men #4 courtesy Marvel

Avengers vs X-Men is Axel Alonso’s first big event as Marvel Editor in Chief. The mega series wraps as marquee creators (Brian Michael Bendis, Jonathan Hickman) end their runs on flagship books (Avengers, Fantastic Four.)

Comics Newsarama asked if the timing is coincidence or sign of an effort to change the Marvel Universe.

“We have some moves planned. The Marvel Universe is changed by AvX. It is not a reboot or a retcon. It is the Marvel Universe that you grew up in. But this story in many ways sort of serves as an endcap to a decade’s worth of stories that we’ve been telling, and I think it begins a great first chapter for the next decade’s worth of stories we’re going to tell.”

“I’m very excited about what we’re doing. We had a fantastic summit. Some long-running creative shifts are occurring — you’ve heard about Brian, for instance; there may be others. We’re very excited about where we’re headed.”

A big question is who will takeover the Avengers franchise after Bendis? How different will the franchise be after the events of AvX – especially with the No More Avengers story twist coming?

If Catwoman Was Your Bodyguard

Anne Hathaway will play Catwoman in Christopher Nolan’s The Dark Knight Rises. I’m still not sure which side the cinematic Selina Kyle will choose – the most recent trailer seemed to show her against Bane.

Catwoman #9 courtesy DC Comics

In the comics – Catwoman and Spark will be caught up in the Night of the Owls crossover this week. The Court of Owls have unleashed assassins to take out targets across Gotham City. Nightwing protected the Mayor. Batwing saved Lucius Fox. The Council went after Batgirl’s dad. In Catwoman #9 Selina Kyle and Spark are forced to defend…The Penguin.

I’ve enjoyed every crossover title so far so I’m looking forward to Catwoman against a Talon but of all the targets…she has to save Penguin?
