Star Trek and Doctor Who Make It So!

It’s a stellar week to be a geek! Doctor Who, Star Trek: The Next Generation. Two sci-fi great franchises that will taste great together in a brand new 8 part comic book series.

The Eleventh Doctor (Matt Smith) makes it so with Captain Picard and the crew of the U.S.S. Enterprise when the their most feared enemies form an unholy alliance.  Star Trek: The Next Generation/Doctor Who: Assimilation2 beams into comic book shops this week courtesy IDW Publishing

Fan-favorite villains the Borg and the Cybermen team up so Doctor Who, Amy Pond and Rory join forces with Jean-Luc Picard and crew to save humanity. Scot and David Tipton (Star Trek: Infestation) and Doctor Who writer Tony Lee collaborate to bring these two universes together.

Are you excited? If you’re like me you might be already dreaming up sequels: The Master and renegade Klingons, Davros and the Gorn, The Silence and Sela the Romulan or how about the time traveling Devidians from the Time’s Arrow two-parter? I’d suggest The Weeping Angels but those stone cold aliens ain’t teaming up with anyone!

A Geek’s “Revenge” Meets “X-Men” Crossover – Updated

New X-Men #131 cover courtesy Marvel.com

Tonight is the finale of REVENGE on ABC so I thought it was a perfect time to revisit this crazy idea I had:

They’re rich, powerful, blonde, manipulative and can deliver razor-sharp one liners like a Hand assassin throws a dagger.

Emma Frost is the reformed White Queen of the Hellfire Club and now co-leader of the X-Men. Emma could teach Emily a few maneuvers!

Nolan Ross (played by Gabriel Mann) is the witty, scheming, brilliant high-tech billionaire with too much time, money and tech on the hit ABC show Revenge.

If ever too characters from similar worlds but different mediums should cross over its these two.  As I watch Revenge I can’t help but think if Emma had a long-lost twin it might be Nolan. Here’s to the “good” guys with an edge who keep us entertained.

This is what happens when a geek has too much time his hands – spinning two of my favorite vices into a twisted idea. Disney does own both companies behind these properties and I can see Frost on holiday in the Hamptons crossing paths with Ross – if he survives tonight’s season finale. Here’s hoping because Revenge wouldn’t be as sweet without him!

New Vampire for Pam on “True Blood”

One of my favorite moments from Fan Expo Vancouver was talking with Kristin Bauer of True Blood. She teased that we’ll learn Pam’s back story this upcoming season. TV Guide has new details.

“There’s a new vampire in her life,” teases creator Alan Ball. This new character will be part of Pam’s life when her maker Eric (Alexander Skarsgard) goes MIA.   Flashbacks this season will reveal how Pam and Eric met in 1905.

“You’ll see how Pam was made,” says Ball.

Will this new vamp being a mentor/lover or both? I just hope Pam survives the Vampire war this season!

It’s Official: Gay X-Man Northstar Will Marry

Astonishing X-Men #50 courtesy Marvel.com

Marvel told fans to “save the date” for a wedding in Astonishing X-Men #51 this June. Fans speculated that Marvel’s first openly gay hero Northstar (Jean-Paul Beaubier) would marry his boyfriend Kyle. Today it’s official – the ladies of ABC’s The View made the announcement. Astonishing X-Men #50 by Marjorie Liu and Mike Perkins is out this week – in which Jean-Paul proposes to Kyle Jinadu.

Jean-Paul is a native of Quebec and introduced in the 1980’s in Alpha Flight. Creator John Byrne said he always planned to have Northstar come out but Marvel’s editorial policy at the time wouldn’t allow it. Northstar came out in Alpha Flight by Scott Lobdell in 1992. Professor X recruited Northstar to be an X-Man and teach at the school. After joining, quitting (he was killed by a brainwashed Wolverine but resurrected) the X-Men and rejoining Alpha Flight Northstar started his own sports events company. He fell in love with his company manager, Kyle.

After Alpha Flight disbanded Northstar accepted Wolverine’s offer to be part of the Jean Grey School for mutants. Jean-Paul and Kyle will live in New York City and Northstar would commute (he’s a super speedster) to the school update.

I’m a big fan of Northstar’s twin sister Jeanne-Marie (Aurora.) Hope she’s able to come to the ceremony. Here’s a previous post with background on the GLBT mutants. We’ve come a long way in this country. I never knew when I wrote this post asking for Marvel to bring Northstar back into the X-Men family back in November of 2011 that I would be posting about his upcoming nuptials.

Doctor Who’s Long Lost Story

It’s the biggest mystery of the Doctor Who universe! Now fans will finally experience the long lost storyline..kinda.

Shada is a 6 part story from the 1979-80 season that was never broadcast. It was written by Douglas Adams, author of The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy. The whole lost story can finally be experienced…as a book.

Shada was released as a radio play. In 1992 footage was released on video with recorded narration from star Tom Baker. This will be first time the full story will be available.

Shada is a prison planet created by the Time Lords to cage would-be conquerors of the universe. One of the galactic bad guys finds a way to unlock the secrets of Shada on Earth in the form of a retired Time Lord. As with most of the serials, The Doctor just happens to be visiting and  eventually saves the day…or universe.

The above photo is the book cover tweeted by BBC books. The other is Tom Baker in his curly haired, scarf attired Whoness on the cover of the VHS movie.

The new book will be written by Gareth Roberts who wrote recent episodes of the BBC show. Thanks to MTV Geek for the story and to BBC for confirming what I remember about the story of Shada’s long strange trip.

If news of this long lost classic from the Tom Baker era makes you nostalgic, IDW publishes Doctor Who comic books from various eras.
