My Most Anticipated 2013 Movies

A Super Bowl packed with movie trailers inspired this list of my most anticipated genre movies in 2013:

#10 Sin City: A Dame To Kill For Robert Rodriguez and Frank Miller take us back to the notorious haven of crime, corruption and women with dangerous curves! Eva Green as Ava, Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Josh Brolin join the hard-core citzens of Basin City! October 29.

#9 Oblivion Tom Cruise is a repairman of the future who finds a clan of humans (led by Morgan Freeman) on what’s supposed to be a scorched Earth! This new film from director Joseph Kosinski looks action packed and thought-provoking. April 19.

#8 Kick-Ass 2 Sadistic, satirical and twisted! More “real” superheroics from the mind of Mark Millar. Jim Carrey as Colonel Stars and Stripes is among the new citizen heroes that follows Kick-Ass’s crusade but the Red Mist is plotting vengeance against the vigilantes! June 28.

#7 World War Z  I absolutely love the book by Max Brooks. I already know the film is very different from the novel. It really should have been a cable series like the Band of Brothers of zombies. I choose to believe in the Pitt…Brad Pitt! June 21.

#6 Pacific Rim Guillerno del Toro. Giant Robots. Giant Monsters. They had me with del Toro and giant anything! July 12.

Who Should Play Sin in CAPTAIN AMERICA 2?

Chris Evans suits up again as the First Avenger in Captain America: The Winter Soldier. The next film will add Anthony Mackie as the heroic Falcon and Frank Grillo as evil muscle man Crossbones.

Emily Van Camp (Revenge) may be playing SHIELD Agent Sharon Carter. All the buzz about the casting of Cap’s girlfriend inspired sinister visions of who should play the raging redheaded she-devil from Cap’s rogues gallery!  If Crossbones is in the sequel then will the Red Skull’s psychotic daughter (and Crossbones’s lover/partner) join the film?

Who should play Sinthea Schmidt aka SIN? Here are five redheads who could really embody pure evil as the Red Skull’s daughter:

REVENGE Star As CAPTAIN AMERICA 2’s Leading Lady?

Has Marvel found Steve Rogers’s modern-day love interest? Sharon Carter (aka Agent 13 of SHIELD) is the descendant of Steve’s World War II love interest Peggy Carter. Emily Van Camp of ABC’s Revenge has been cast as Sharon in Captain America: The Winter Soldier according to Deadline.

Van Camp plays Emily Thorne (real name Amanda Walker) on the hit series about a young woman seeking vengeance on the family that destroyed her father’s reputation and had him killed. This season the soap has ramped up the spy elements as Emily and her partner (who they jokingly call James Bond on the show because of his accent and skills) try to thwart the plans of a sinister society.

Looks like this season has been practice if Van Camp is really signed on to play the SHIELD agent opposite Chris Evans!

SUPERMAN UNBOUND Against Brainiac!

Superman soars on the big screen in Man of Steel but you can watch a modern classic Superman story on the small screen at home! Henry Cavill will face off against General Zod (Michael Shannon) but the Kryptonian born hero faces a different arch enemy in Superman Unbound.

In this Nerdist Exclusive preview of the upcoming movie we see Superman, Supergirl, the invasion of Kandor and one of my favorite villians: Brainiac!

The animated film is based on the Geoff Johns Action Comics story. Brainiac started out as a green guy in a pink suit but evolved into a monstrous machine capable of wiping out planets.

Take a look:

Matt Bomer (White Collar) is the voice of the Man of Steel in this film. John Noble (Fringe, Lord of the Rings) is the Brainiac.

Thanks to the mighty Nerdist – a MUST for nerds!

Who had the brilliance to geenlight Doctor Who all those years ago? Whovians will discover how the classic time traveler came to television!

The first Doctor Who lives again in An Adventure in Space and Time. The upcoming film celebrates the 50th Anniversary of the Time Lord and how the iconic sci-fi series was born. The BBC announced David Bradley (Argus Filch in the Harry Potter films) will portray the late William Hartnell, the first actor to portray the Doctor in the first serial An Unearthly Child. Bradley played a villain in the recent Dinosaurs on a Spaceship episode opposite current Doctor, Matt Smith.  Brian Cox (The Bourne Identity, The Bourne Supremacy, X2 – X-Men United) will play the BBC executive credited with the creation of the series. Filming starts the next month.

The X-FILES Open Again!

The truth is out there! Mulder and Scully’s investigations of the paranormal and supernatural are back! The X-Files will be reopened in brand new and recollected comic books from IDW Publishing and Twentieth Century Fox Consumer Products.

IDW’s publishing plan includes reprinting collections of the classic issues published intermittently from 1995 through 2009 and creating brand-new X-FILES comics to launch in June 2013.

“THE X-FILES is a classic property that helped redefine fans’ expectations for the science-fiction and horror genres,” said IDW’s President/Chief Operating Officer Greg Goldstein. “The possibilities for new comic stories are virtually unlimited!”

“The fans of THE X-FILES have remained loyal to the series since its conclusion. What better way to continue the show’s legacy and give back to them than through new stories in a different medium,” said Jeffrey Godsick, President of Fox Consumer Products. “IDW has worked with a number of our Fox properties, and we know they’re going to do great things with these iconic characters.”

“Few shows have captured the zeitgeist and fans’ imaginations like THE X-FILES, and fewer shows still have left people hungry for more in the way this one did,” said Chris Ryall, IDW’s Chief Creative Officer/Editor-in-Chief. “Our new series will be picking up where the second film left off, which will hopefully be as exciting for fans to read as it is for us to develop.”

The big question: who would you like to see write a new X-Files series?

Making Sick Kids Feel Like Princesses and Heroes

Comic books and fairy tales are a way for kids to escape and for adults to escape and relive their childhood. I was really moved by this story about a mom making tutus and capes to make sick kids feel like Princesses and Superheroes! This isn’t the usual comic book news and views you usually get on this site but I wanted to share this.

Thanks to a great storyteller, Michelle Esteban, KOMO 4 News for sharing this story and for everyone to reached out to help Janay.

Wil Wheaton! Now It Really Feels Like Comicon!

Actor, author, gamer and geek icon Wil Wheaton will return to Emerald City Comicon, March 1-3, 2013 in Seattle. Wheaton played Wesley Crusher on Star Trek: The Next Generation and has been a voice actor on several popular video game franchises plus recently appeared on The Big Bang Theory and Eureka.

I will always remember Wheaton as Gordie from one of my all-time favorite movies: Stand By Me.

This is Wheaton’s 6th consecutive year as guest of ECCC. Wheaton’s ST:TNG co-star Patrick Stewart is making his first ECCC appearance this year.
