Avengers Assembles New Team, Spider-Woman & Captain Marvel

Avengers Assemble courtesy Marvel.com

Kelly Sue DeConnick and Stefano Caselli are the new creative team on Avengers Assemble. Spider-Woman and the new Captain Marvel are joining up too. DeConnick and Executive Editor Tom Brevoort talked with Marvel.com about new members and tone of the movie-friendly title.

“These are the AC/DC Avengers. When I saw the movie, I managed to keep in together until Iron Man came onscreen and Back in Black blared. I bounced up and down in my chair. That’s the moment I’m writing for,” Kelly Sue DeConnick said.

“These will be tight ‘get in, get out’ adventures, focused mostly on the classic, ‘public’ Avengers from the movie, drawing in other characters as it demands. Big impact.” – Tom Brevoort added.

The inclusion of Spider-Woman on the teaser image sparked excitement for a bigger role…movie role…for Jessica in the Avengers sequel.

“I really really like Jessica Drew. I like how crazy and broken she is. She’s a character I really wanted to write,” DeConnick revealed.

“I don’t ever want to be in direct competition with Brian Michael Bendis. I might be able to beat him up, that’s possible. We’re different writers with different takes. We do have a similar sense of humor and love for banter-y dialogue. I have been a fan of Brian’s for many years long before I knew him. But I’m writing my Avengers book,” DeConnick said of following Bendis.

“The first arc is kind of an Amazing Race thing where the Avengers are teaming up and competing with each other. Spider-Woman is with Hulk and Thor with Iron Man,” DeConnick said of her initial story.

DeConnick just relaunched Ms. Marvel as the new Captain Marvel and now becomes the first female writer on an Avengers title.

“I’m very interested in making sure women knowing that wanting to work in this industry is not peculiar. There is not anything in heroism or sci fi that is exclusively masculine. The hero ideal is as important to my daughter as it is to my son. But I don’t want to represent all women in comics…particularly because I blow things sometimes!” DeConnick said.

“If Cap or Thor or Hulk are there, you can have Quasar or Machine Man or Triathlon standing next to them in context. They may not be in the movies now, but wait until Avengers 9!” – Tom Brevoort said of upcoming guest stars.

Spider-Woman Joins Avengers Assemble and Avengers Sequel?

courtesy Marvel.com

After a week of reveals the Marvel tease machine cranked back up with a new image that sparks a ton of speculation over the future of the Avengers and which new hero may join an Avengers 2 sequel.

This Marvel.com teaser looks like Kelly Sue DeConnick (Captain Marvel) and Stefano Caselli are taking over Avengers Assemble in November. This is the “movie friendly version” of Earth’s Mightiest Heroes book.

Could this be a sign that Spider-Woman may join the lineup in the Avengers 2 sequel or series being developed by Joss Whedon?

Editor in Chief Axel Alonso did say Spider-Woman will remain part of the Avengers and may turn up in Avengers Assemble. And this fuels my hope that Mila Kunis play Jessica Drew on the big screen!

This Geek’s Top Panels for GeekGirlCon in Seattle

The GEEK will be celebrated and SHE has earned it! GeekGirlCon will honor contributions of women to geek culture. The first event was a sold out smash and organizers have listened to fan input in planning this year’s event in Seattle this weekend.

Here are there top panels I’m most excited about:

Moffat’s Women: Companions, Travelers, Gender Roles and TARDISES in Doctor WhoRiver Song, Amy Pond, Donna Noble, Rose Tyler and Martha Jones (my personal favorite) are the women who make Doctor Who’s journeys so compelling. This panel discusses the female characters Executive Producer Steven Moffat created, both now and under Russell T. Davies. The panelist will take on: transgender issues implied by a Time Lord’s regenerative ability, the representation of LGBT characters (omnisexual Captain Jack Harkness!) and lifestyles and The Doctor’s Wife (aka the TARDIS.)

Batgirl #12 courtesy DC Comics

Gail Simone and the Batgirl of San Diego: Batgirls, One Year Later –Gail Simone blazed a trail with dynamic writing and powerful characters in Birds of Prey and Secret Six plus she wrote Deadpool and The Simpsons. Last year Simone took Barbara Gordon out of her wheelchair and put her back on the streets of Gotham City in a reboot of Batgirl. At least year’s SDCC Simone donned a cape and cowl while asking pointed questions about the lack of female representation in comics. Gail Simone and “The Batgirl of San Diego” discuss the state of comics today and the future. Spotlight on Gail Simone is on Sunday in a discussion of her career, her views on social issues and women in comics.

Jane Espenson and Husbands—A Comedy for the Marriage Equality Age Espenson has written for Buffy The Vampire Slayer, Battlestar Galactica and Warehouse 13. Husbands is her web show in the tradition of classic comedies. Producers and cast will discuss making the show and its future.

From Jedi Princess to Sith Witch: An Exploration of Female Characters in Star Wars – From Leia to Padme and all the witches, bounty hunters, smugglers and women who light up both sides of The Force in the sci-fi universe.

There are two days packed with more panels about gaming, blogging and more. Here’s my preview of GeekGirlCon 2012.

New James Bond Skyfall Poster

courtesy 007.com

James Bond shares the new poster for Skyfall with his two leading ladies (Severine, Eve) and the villain (Silva.) Daniel Craig, Berenice Marlohe, Javier Bardem and  Naomie Harris are featued in the poster for UK theatres. Each character will receive their own poster too. Bardem’s creepy blonde character has been in my head since seeing the trailer. He reminds me so much of Red Grant (played by the brilliant Robert Shaw) in From Russia, With Love. Who is Silva? I suspect he may be one of the deep cover MI6 agents exposed by M’s misteps as seen in the trailer. I have this idea in my head that perhaps Silva has gone blonde to model himself after Bond?

Ben Affleck Directing Justice League Movie? UPDATED

Justice League #1 DC Comics, Art by Jim Lee

Update: Representatives for the actor/director have denied reports that Ben Affleck will direct the Justice League movie according to Deadline

Original Story:

The man who played Marvel’s Daredevil may be directing DC’s Justice League movie. Ben Affleck has been approached by Warner Brothers to helm the big screen film starring DC’s biggest heroes according to Variety.

The writer/director/star of The Town and upcoming Argo is the only director who’s seen the script by Will Beall and is meeting the studio’s top brass this week according to the story.

Is this a smart move? Marvel tapped comedy actor/director Jon Favreau for the first Iron Man and the rest is pop culture history.

Ben Affleck is the lead in all the films he directed so would be play a member of the Justice League? Superman, Batman, Green Lantern, Flash? The man has the build and face of a superhero. Affleck played George Reeves (the first actor to play Superman on television) in Hollywoodland.

Maxwell Lord in The Omac Project courtesy DC Comics

I’d love to see Afflect portray supervillain Maxwell Lord. I don’t know if he’s the foe in the script but that’s the character that jumped to my mind when I saw Affleck’s potential involvement.

Greg Rucka’s OMAC Project, a prelude to the Infinite Crisis event, is a gripping story that demonstrating why Max Lord is a perfect villain. This story dramatically changed the relationships between Superman, Wonder Woman and Batman. This epic with just DC’s Big Three would make a powerhouse movie.

Who is Maxwell Lord? A human entrepreneur who created the Justice League that he ran like a company. Later Lord developed mind control abilities and joined the covert espionage agency Checkmate. All that time working as an ally of the JL Lord was gathering information (weaknesses) on the world’s heroes in a plot to wipe them off the planet. Imagine Superman under the control of a warped criminal mind? The Man of Steel actually was compelled to beat Batman to death until…well just read the Omac Project!

Joss Whedon, Avengers Sequel and Television Series

Marvel’s The Avengers courtesy Marvel

Marvel’s The Avengers director Joss Whedon will be back to write and direct the sequel and develop a new Marvel Universe themed, live-action television series for ABC according to Variety.

No word on which characters will appear in the television series. I’m betting on the agents of SHIELD. Disney/ABC is already developing a Hulk series with Giullermo Del Toro.
