Spider-Man Vampire Morbius Gets His Own Series

One of Spider-Man’s most tragic and frightening foes will get his own series this January. Marvel announced a new Morbius series at Fan Expo Canada. Writer Joe Keatinge and artist Rich Elson are the creative team on the new ongoing starring The Living Vampire.

“AMAZING SPIDER-MAN #699.1 (coming in December) is essentially MORBIUS #0,” asserts Keatinge. “If you’ve never read a Morbius comic book before, ASM #699.1 gets you up to date on absolutely everything there is to know about him. It takes him from where Dan Slott and company took him to and sets him on the course of everything Rich and I have in store.”

“He’s not over the guilt, that’s for sure,” the writer says. “He’s a guy very much crippled by it. How he gets through that is a major thrust of our initial arc.

“Every goal [Morbius] has is ultimately focused on redemption and atonement. Curing himself is definitely part of that. We’re giving him an opportunity to do just that, but given his history you can bet it’s not going to go well.”

Morbius and the Lizard were villains in Dan Slott’s Amazing Spider-Man arc this summer while Dr. Connors was stalking Spidey on the big screen. I think Morbius would be a perfectly creepy new villain for an Amazing Spider-Man sequel.

THOR 2 Cast New Villain

Kurse image courtesy Marvel.com

Adewale Akinnouoye-Agbaje is joining the Thor sequel according to Variety. The actor will play two villain roles in Thor: The Dark World: Algrim the Strong and Kurse.

Algrim is one of the most powerful Dark Elves ordered by King Malekith (who will be played by Doctor Who veteran Christopher Eccleston) to kill Thor. Through a series of twists and turns Algrim becomes Kurse. Magic, magma and Algrim’s intense hatred of the Odinson transform the Elf.

You may have seen the actor in The Bourne Identity and G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra but LOST devotees like myself loved him as Mr. Eko.

Kat Dennings (Two Broke Girls) will reprise her role as the science intern Darcy and will have an expanded role according to Deadline.

A new cinematic Peter Parker (Andrew Garfield) scored on the big screen and rebooted the Spider-Man movie franchise. This week get ready for a huge change in Spidey’s flagship comic book. Spidey is getting a sidekick in this week’s 50th Anniversary issue –Amazing Spider-Man #692.
Writer Dan Slott and Artist Humberto Ramos give Peter Parker a new partner. Slacker teen Andy McGuire becomes “Alpha” when he’s in the wrong place at the wrong time…in a lab with Peter Parker.

Spider-Man is an Avenger, part of the Future Foundation and has co-starred in his own team-up book but he’s never had a teen sidekick. Marvel Editor-In-Chief Axel Alonso revealed to Fox why this is the time for a partner?

“Part of it is that Spider-Man is grown up,” said Alonso, “He’s older, more seasoned, but young at heart. He’s still a young man, but he’s been around. It’s interesting because it flips the paradigm. Teen hero Spider-Man is now responsible for this teen hero sidekick. He’s responsible because one of his inventions caused this kid to get his powers. He’s directly responsible for the responsibility this kid now has with his new powers. He feels he has a responsibility to make sure this kid walks the right path, which won’t prove easy.”

Amazing Spider-Man scribe Dan Slott says don’t expect this team to be exactly like DC’s dynamic duo.

“If you put Spider-Man and Batman in the same situation, you’re going to have way more fun with Spider-Man,” said Dan Slott. “With Batman, he never really screws up the way Spider-Man does; he always seems to make the right decision. But with Spider-Man, he always screws up. He’s us as a superhero. Batman is a paragon of what we’d like to be, but in reality, we’re more like Spider-Man. He makes all the mistakes we make.”

It’s easy to compare Andy/Alpha to Batman’s Robin but will be more like Dick Grayson, Jason Todd or Tim Drake?
