SHIELD TV Will Be New Characters

Joss Whedon is lined up for Avengers 2 and a SHIELD television pilot for ABC. The creator tells MTV News don’t expect the focus on Nick Fury, Maria Hill and Earth’s Mightiest Heroes.

“It’s new characters. It needs to be its own thing,” said Whedon. “It needs to be adjacent [to the MCU] but you don’t want to do a show where you’re constantly going, ‘Iron Man just left, but he was totally here a minute ago.’ You want them to do their own thing.”

“Well, what does S.H.I.E.L.D. have that the other superheroes don’t? And that, to me, is that they’re not superheroes,” said Whedon. “But they live in that universe. Even though they’re a big organization, that [lack of powers] makes them underdogs, and that’s interesting to me.”

Clay Quartermain? Valentina? Dum Dum Dugan? Who will join the TV SHIELD?

 Avengers 2 opens May 1, 2015.

Joss Whedon on Avengers Sequel: Diggs Deeper

Marvel’s The Avengers courtesy Marvel

The Avengers sequel is two and half years away but that won’t stop fans from geeking out over every morsel, comment and hint between now and then. Director Joss Whedon does promise assembling the team in the first film was just the beginning.

“The creation of the team is not the happy ending,” he tells 24 Hours. “It is the beginning of something that is complex and difficult, and now I get to dig a little deeper. And maybe, while I’m digging, just twist that knife. And that’s exciting for me.”

While Whedon will write and direct the sequel that assembles Earth’s Mightiest Heroes don’t expect him to be the Grandmaster (to pay homage to a Marvel villain) over the solo films coming out before the mega-sequel.

“Very talented people are writing and directing these movies, and what I don’t want to be is the guy they dread, who’s going to come in and say” — here, Whedon reportedly affected a “pompous British accent” — “‘Oh, well I have the power to say change this,’” he said. “I’m not that.”

Thanks to Spinoff Online. The Avengers 2 assembles May 1, 2015.

The Flying Swords of Dragon Gate

The Flying Swords of Dragon Gate is an amazing spectacle starring Jet Li and directed by Tsui Hark and shot in 3D. I saw it in IMAX and I’ve never ducked and moved and jumped so much in a 3D film. Swords pierced off the screen and I swear I could see it in my peripheral vision!
Take a look at the trailer and I have a comic book connection for you after!

I left this film longing to go to Kun Lun! Marvel Films, please put Iron Fist and Shang Chi, Master of Kung Fu on the big screen!

The Flying Swords of Dragon Gate is in Mandarin with subtitles and on a limited release. Experience it if you can!

First Look at Wolverine’s Ronin Lover

Hugh Jackman as Wolverine courtesy Marvel.com

Part of the excitement of The Wolverine movie is seeing Hugh Jackman take on the Silver Samurai and lots and lots of ninjas! Part of the anticipation is Jackman in scenes with two very different women: Lady Mariko and the wild Yukio. The Ronin is ordered to assassinate Logan but develops a romantic fascination with him after seeing him “doing the best at what he does.”

Lady Mariko is shocked by Logan’s violence. Yukio gets turned on after seeing what an excellent killer he is.

Comic Book Movie scored this first look at Rila Fukushima as Yukio. It looks like Yukio will not be sporting her short spikey hair from the comic books. In the pages of X-Men Storm was inspired by Yukio to change her hair and get a mohawk.

Judge Dredd, Under the Helmet

courtesy Lionsgate

“You couldn’t respectfully call it a Judge Dredd movie if I’m taking my helmet off,” says actor Karl Urban, star of Dredd 3D.

“Thank You!” respond Judge Dredd fans!

“That’s the way the character was conceived by [‘Dredd’ creator John Wagner] back in 1975. I was a fan of this comic growing up, and when I learned that they were going to do a completely new reboot, I read the script, and as soon as I saw that we were treating it with respect that was it,” continues Urban in a new MTV feature.

I wanted to share this cool new featurette that includes commentary from Judge Dredd creator John Wagner, director Pete Travis and writer Alex Garland.

“He’s your greatest hero and biggest nightmare wrapped up in one,” says Wagner. Take a look at see why!

Dredd 3D opens September 21st.

Watch for upcoming comics to fix your Judge Dredd obsession! IDW is launching a new series and publishing new collections of Judge classics.

ABC Greenlights SHIELD TV Pilot by Joss Whedon

Cobie Smulders as Maria Hill in Marvel’s The Avengers courtesy Marvel.com

ABC has ordered a pilot for a live-action television series from Marvel’s The Avengers writer-producer Joss Whedon according to Deadline. Whedon will co-write and possibly direct!

S.H.I.E.L.D. is the peacekeeping organization run by Nick Fury (Samuel L. Jackson) as seen in Iron Man, Thor, Captain America and The Avengers. The pilot will be written by Whedon, his brother Jed Whedon and Maurissa Tancharoen. Agent Phil Coulson (Clark Gregg) and Maria Hill (Cobie Smulders) were agents of SHIELD.

Can we get Cobie Smulders (How I Met Your Mother) out of her contract and in this show?! I love Maria Hill!

Here are links to some of my favorite SHIELD stories you might enjoy: Nick Fury: Agent of SHIELD by Jim Steranko, Nick Fury vs. SHIELD by Bob Harras, Secret War by Brian Michael Bendis and The Ultimates: Ultimate Collection by Mark Millar.  Here’s a link to Marvel’s The Avengers on Blu Ray.

Greg Capullo Promises Big Scares With Joker

Batman #13 teaser courtesy DC Comics

The idea of the Joker drawn by Greg Capullo is frightening and exciting. Bruce Wayne’s arch foe returns in Batman #13 this October by the artist and writer Scott Snyder. Capullo teased the villain’s return at Fan Expo Canada comparing the classic rogue to a classic horror film.

“We’re going to scare and frighten the s**t out of you all,” said Capullo. “This is going to be Joker meets Texas Chainsaw Massacre. Joker had his face on ice, and he’s robbed and stolen the face back. I think it would be cool to have this stuff rotting away, so there’s flies buzzing around him. You guys think that’s cool? I hope all your pants will get tight, and your nipples will stiffen, and you’ll enjoy it.”

Death of the Family will affect the Batman family of books. Here’s a link to covers of October’s books teasing the Joker’s plans.
