Superman’s Big Decision!

Superman #13 courtesy DC Comics

This is not the classic Man of Steel you knew. First Superman kissed Wonder Woman in Justice League #13. Now he’s making a major life decision. According to USA Today Clark Kent will resign from the Daily Planet in this week’s Superman #13. What gets the mild-mannered reporter so fired up he calls it quits? It’s not the Superman you knew and that’s kind of the point. DC relauched their entire universe to reflect younger heroes and more modern world. Could Clark end up on a cable news network or start his own You Tube channel or blog?

That’s not the only big change coming to DC’s biggest icon. A major new Kryptonian enemy will  Superman, Supergirl and Superboy in the He’l on Earth storyline. Is the alien threat too much for Superman? Will Kal-El be forced to turn to his greatest enemy? Clark is seen visiting Lex Luthor on the cover of Superman #15 coming out in December.

When DC relaunched The New 52 Superman was no longer married to Lois Lane and The Daily Planet newspaper is part of the multimedia giant Galaxy Broadcasting. Editors says the Superman/Wonder Woman romance is the new status quo but what about Clark’s career?

Scott Lobdell and Kenneth Rocafort are the new creative team on the Superman book. Scott Snyder and Jim Lee launch a brand new Superman title in 2013. Andy Diggle and Tony Daniel take over Action Comics in 2013.

It’s an exciting time to be a Superman fan. 2013 is Superman’s 75th Anniversary. The Superman reboot Man of Steel starring Henry Cavill and directed by Zach Snyder flies into theaters next year.

Marvel unveiled the first offical one-sheet for Iron Man 3. Robert Downey, Jr. will suit up once again as the Armored Avenger. Tony Stark is seen in his hall of armor. The story is based in part on Iron Man Extremis by Warren Ellis and Adi Granov. Tony Stark will need extra firepower against a gang of villains played by Ben Kingsley, Guy Pierce and James Badge Dale.

The Iron Man 3 trailer hits tomorrow. The sequel hits theaters May 3, 2013.

Who are you most excited to see in the trailer? It has to be Kingsley (as the Mandarin?) for me!

Batman Comes Home! Adam West at Emerald City Comicon 2013

Adam West as Batman, courtesy Emerald City Comicon

Make way for pop royalty! A hometown boy made good is coming home! Adam West will appear at Emerald City Comicon in Seattle March 1-3. 2013. The Seattle native played Batman on the camptastic 1960’s ABC television series and in the first Batman feature film.

That voice. That delivery. That style. Adam West is an icon. Every weekday I would rush home from school to watch Batman reruns in the afternoon. I watched the first Batman movie over and over.

In recent years West has become a popular voice actor on Spongebob Squarepants, Johnny Bravo and as “Mayor Adam West” on Family Guy.

West was born in Seattle and raised in Walla Walla, Washington. The iconic actor will appear at Emerald City Comicon 2013 all three days – his first public appearance in Washington state in nearly 20 years. This will be his first Northwest convention appearance in 3 decades.

Adam West will always hold a special place in the hearts and memories of comic book fans. The campy classic series was the gateway to comic books for young geeks like me at the time. No matter how dark the Dark Knight turns there is always a special  for in pop culture for West’s Caped Cruader.

Emerald City Comicon will make the Washington State Convention Center a giant Batcave March 1-3, 2013 in Seattle.

Jean Grey In THE WOLVERINE

Hugh Jackman as The Wolverine courtesy Marvel and 20th Century Fox

Famke Janssen will reprise her role as Jean Grey in The Wolverine. The actress has filmed her cameo role according to We’ve Got This Covered. Hugh Jackman returns as the fan favorite X-Man in this new solo film based on Logan’s adventures in Japan where he will fall in love with the Lady Mariko – daughter  of a crime lord.

Jean Grey was his teammate and great unrequited love of his life in the X-Men movies. Wolverine was forced to kill her to stop the wrath of Dark Phoenix. No word on how Janssen’s cameo will play in the film.

The X-Men: First Class sequel will be Days of Future Past based on the classic story – Days of Future Past and The Wolverine are by Chris Claremont. In that story Rachel Summers (daughter of Scott and Jean) sends Kitty Pryde back in time to prevent an assassination and the dark future in which mutants are killed or imprisoned.

Could The Wolverine and Days of Future Past be setting the stage for a reunion or reboot of the X-Men (modern day) film franchise?

Batman and Justice League for Halloween?

I grew up in a small town with no little options for Halloween. I lucked out and found a Darth Vader costume and wore it year after year. I was a tall kid so I worked it! Last year I was Green Lantern – Ryan Reynolds, watch out!

DC Comics heroes are icons that will never go away! With the success of The Dark Knight Rises, the Superman reboot on the way and the possibility of a Justice League movie it’s never been a better time to suit up as a member of the Justice League for Halloween!

The newer Batman is always a dark neo-classic and there’s even a nearly $400.00 dollar Dark Knight outfit  that might attract the purrfect Catwoman at your holiday party!  You could go a little more gosh darn wholesome and for the retro Batman look of the Adam West series.

Enjoy your Halloween! Be safe!

Justice League Movie Summer 2015?

Justice League #1 DC Comics, Art by Jim Lee

The Summer of 2015 could be a superhero showdown between DC’s Justice League vs. Marvel’s The Avengers!

Warner Brothers is expected to move ahead with a Justice League movie following the result of a battle over Superman rights according to The Los Angeles Times. The studio would shoot next year for a Summer 2015 release. A script is already in the works.

So what could the big screen roster look like?

If Man of Steel is a success we can assume Henry Cavill will reprise the role of Superman in sequels and in this Justice League film. Armie Hammer was attached to play Batman in George Miller’s attempt at a Justice League film before his star rose and is said to be a front-runner to play the Dark Knight in this team film.

The current DC Comics The New 52 Justice League comic book roster also includes Cyborg, Aquaman, Flash, and Wonder Woman (she and Superman are becoming a romantic couple after their passionate kiss in Justice League #12.) Green Lantern Hal Jordan just quit but other Lanterns could join the movie. John Stewart was in the Justice League animated series.

Justice League #3 from DC Comics. Cover by Jim Lee

Personally I would prefer to see DC Comics Trinity only – Superman, Batman and Wonder Woman – in a clash against Darkseid.

The Summer of 2015 could be Avengers (2) vs. Justice League at the box-office! Marvel’s sequel to Earth’s Mightiest Heroes opens May 1, 2015.

How THE DARK KNIGHT Inspired SKYFALL Director

How did Batman influence the latest James Bond adventure?

Skyfall is already scoring great reviews. Director Sam Mendes tells IndieWire he was “directly inspired” by Christopher Nolan’s Dark Knight Trilogy.

“In terms of what [Nolan] achieved, specifically ‘The Dark Knight,’ the second movie, what it achieved, which is something exceptional. It was a game changer for everybody,” he explained about how it influenced his approach.

“We’re now in an industry where movies are very small or very big and there’s almost nothing in the middle,” he continued. “And it would be a tragedy if all the serious movies were very small and all the popcorn movies were very big and have nothing to say. And what Nolan proved was that you can make a huge movie that is thrilling and entertaining and has a lot to say about the world we live in, even if, in the case with ‘The Dark Knight,’ it’s not even set in our world. If felt like a movie that was about our world post-9/11 and played on our fears and discussed our fears and why they existed and I thought that was incredibly brave and interesting. That did help give me the confidence to take this movie in directions that, without ‘The Dark Knight,’ might not have been possible. Because also, people go, ‘Wow, that’s pretty dark,’ but then you can point to ‘Dark Knight’ and go ‘Look at that – that’s a darker movie, and it took in a gazillion dollars!’ That’s very helpful. There’s also that thing – it’s clearly possible to make a dark movie that people want to see.”

Skyfall hits U.S. theaters November 9th.

Christopher Nolan has expressed how a classic 007 film influenced Inception and his potential involvement with the Bond franchise. You can read that here.
