IRON MAN 3: Mandarin Strikes a Pose!

Will Tony Stark meet his match as Marvel unleashes the Armored Avenger’s greatest enemy from the comic books onto the big screen! The latest Iron Man 3 poster showcases Ben Kingsley as Mandarin! The creators have taken a different approach in translating the super villain. No flowing robes and he’s definitely not Asian. From what I’ve read, the creators decide to make this terrorist leader an amalgam of various cultures and as you can see by the poster he sports a more rugged, militaristic style.

The Mandarin is infamous for his 10 power rings (which were recovered a crashed alien ship.) Could this Mandarin be the leader of the 10 Rings terrorist group that kidnapped Tony in the first film?

How will the Mandarin be connected to scientist Aldrich Killian (Guy Pearce) and the Extremis nanotechnology?

Don Cheadle is back as James Rhodes but he will be wearing the Iron Patriot armor in this film.

Iron Man 3 hits May 3rd.

Australian actor Jason Clarke (Zero Dark Thirty) will star in Dawn of the Planet of the Apes according The Hollywood Reporter Heat Vision. Matt Reeves (Cloverfield, Let Me In) will direct the sequel said to be set 15 years after the events of the first film. Andy Serkis will reprise his role as Caesar. No word on if Clarke will play a human or ape. Clarke gave an intense performance as a CIA agent/torturer in Zero Dark Thirty. No word yet on if Rise of the Planet of the Apes stars James Franco or Frieda Pinto will be back.

If the news has you going bananas (yes that was bad) then check out the excellent Planet of the Apes comic book series (there’s more than one)from Boom! Studios to get your fix.

IRON MAN 3 Villain

Marvel revealed a new poster for Iron Man 3 starring Guy Pearce. The actor who played the founder of the “company” in the Alien movie mythology (Prometheus) will make scientist Aldrich Killian come of life on the big screen. Killian is a rival of Tony Stark created in the comic book classic: Iron Man: Extremis. I’m excited to see the scenes between Killian and Stark. Rebecca Hall plays Maya Hansen, another scientist on the frightening science project from nanotech hell.

Robert Downey, Jr will face Ben Kingsley as the Mandarin. Plus, we’ll see Don Cheadle reprise his role as James Rhodes but wearing the Iron Patriot armor in the sequel.

Iron Man 3 arrives May 3.

STAR WARS Leia Speculation

Star Wars #1 courtesy Dark Horse Comics
Star Wars #1 courtesy Dark Horse Comics

A long time ago in a cinema far away I saw my first movie on the big screen. Star Wars is still firing my imagination all these years later. After my editorial on possibility of Harrison Ford reprising his role as Han Solo in Star Wars VII, I immediately started thinking of Leia. The Princess is currently kicking Imperial ass in a brand new Star Wars comic (set after A New Hope) by Brian Wood from Dark Horse Comics. Carrie Fisher (and Billy Dee Williams) will be appearing on my home planet of Seattle for Emerald City Comicon. I’ve got Leia on my mind.

I want Carrie Fisher in the next Star Wars too. After Return of the Jedi I think the Princess married Han and had kids (hopefully twins – hint Hollywood – Heir to the Empire by Timothy Zahn!) It wasn’t a happily ever after for Leia and Han. I can see Leia having a critical role in creating the New Republic while exploring her emerging Jedi powers. Han would slide back into his scoundrel ways. The kid in me wants the happy ending but the adult in me is excited about the great story potential of a bitter Han and Leia reuniting after a bitter breakup for ths sake of their kids and to save the galaxy one last time. Ford and Fisher had the best chemistry and this is the kind of story that could bring back the love/hate the actors radiated so perfectly in The Empire Strikes Back.

As for a spinoff or flashback? My vote is for Lizzy Caplan as a young Leia but I really want to see Carrie Fisher be a tough space mom to the next generation of heroes, blast lasers, match wits with Ford and unleash some Jedi power in the future that is Star Wars.
