From the best Batman to the worst X-Man to a fan-favorite Doctor Who companion’s comeback – here are our top five new comics picks of the week:
Batman #50
Bruce Wayne is back in the famous cape and cowl to join Jim Gordon in a battle with Mister Bloom to save Gotham City. It’s the super-sized conclusion of Superheavy as we near the end of an epic era by writer Scott Snyder and artist Greg Capullo.
When Dinah Lance scored a new comic book by Brenden Fletcher and Annie Wu, she became lead singer of a band called Black Canary and went on a rock and roll mystery tour.
Black Canary is our favorite post-Convergence event DC comic.
Marvel Comics’ Ms. Marvel, by writer G. Willow Wilson of Seattle and artist Adrian Alphona, won the second annual Dwayne McDuffie Award for Diversity in Comics, presented at Long Beach Comic Expo in Long Beach, California.
The breakout character has become a fan-favorite and rookie member of the Avengers.
Wilson praised Ms. Marvel fans in an impassioned acceptance speech graciously thanking readers who make the book a success.
“This award is very special to me, not just because of its connection to Dwayne, but because of what it represents…it is something being kept alive by one thing only and that is the readers and the fans whose passion, whose cosplay, whose wonderful repartee on Tumblr and Twitter make this book such a joy to work on.”
Seattle Seahawks defensive stars Richard Sherman and Bobby Wagner are already superheroes to football fans. Now two of Seattle’s most famous sports stars are joining the heroic action at Emerald City Comicon 2016.
Sherman and Wagner will help kick-off the 14th Edition of Emerald City Comicon as the Pacific Northwest’s biggest pop culture celebration expands to four days.

Local fans and visitors are invited to a one-night free event celebrating the spirit of independent artists and Seattle’s underground comic book community.

Creators Casey Silver and Dimi Macheras (80% Studios, creators of Guttertown Massive) formed the event out of a desire to connect creators, readers and the stories that bond them in a new way. ReedPOP and Fremont Brewing of Seattle announced the launch of the Dark Heron. This new exclusive brew has been created to be the Official Beer of Emerald City Comicon 2016.
