This Geek’s Opinion:
This is definitely a digital comics push but could this focus be on Marvel’s cosmic characters only?
My first thought “an exciting new way to enjoy comics” but I have to admit I also thought “so it’s not enough I have to buy an untold number of issues but download more to get the entire AVX storyline?”
Shazam! courtesy DC Comics, a New York Post exclusive
Will comic fans be electrified by the new interpretation of a classic character? The new look of Shazam designed by Gary Frank premiered in the New York Post. The DC Comics New 52 version of the icon will debut in Justice League #7 in a new back-up story according to The Source.
With SHAZAM! Gary and I will be focusing on the magic hero instead of the super hero,” Johns said. “For centuries, science has ruled the world, but now magic is returning. We’re telling the story of the hero’s young alter ego, Billy Batson, a foster kid at a crossroads in his life. The question is, how does the emotional journey of this troubled teenager collide with the fate of the world? The Rock of Eternity and the legacy of SHAZAM! will be explored in a different way as the extent of Billy’s connection to the magic world around him is greater than ever before. The story will have a profound impact on Justice League later in the year and you’ll see new characters, locations and creatures along with the classics from the SHAZAM! universe. Billy’s friends and enemies will be along for the ride.”
“You’ll notice that SHAZAM! looks different from many of the other heroes we’ve seen in DC COMICS-THE NEW 52,” said editor Brian Cunningham. “That was definitely intentional. His powers come from a different place, and we wanted to see that reflected in the design. We’ve removed the “circus strongman” elements from his costume. Rather than a traditional cape, he wears a cloak with a hood; there’s more of a mystical, magical, fantasy feel to that.”
What do you think of the hooded hero and his new name?
I remember enjoying the Captain Marvel half hour live action series on Saturday mornings.

Robocop is back on duty. Joel Kinnaman (The Killing, Safe House)signed on for the MGM remake directed by Jose Padilha (Elite Squad) according to Deadline.
Peter Weller played the original Robocop in Paul Verhoeven’s 1987 version. Dark Horse Comics published several comic book miniseries starring Robocop including one in which the cyber law enforcer fought the Terminator. Marvel Comics publised an 23 issue series.
Matt is a shy college geek smitten with K.T. his gorgeous lab partner. Will is Matt’s overeager resident advisor who promises to help him win the girl if he gets him through his graduate thesis.
Will’s obsession with a local horror legend leads to an underground lair. Just when the guys think they’ve got the key to the mystery all hell bites loose. Trying to win the heart of a hot girl unearths a cold dead curse buried in the college library.
This is a fun adventure with a geeky guy to cheer for, a hot chick and zombies on campus. Matt and K.T. are like Peter Parker and M.J. with the humor, curves ramped up to comedic levels.
Over the top art in unique panel layouts mixed with quick pacing make this a fun escapade. A story of bookish guys, boobs and brains with a sense of mystery, comedy and horror.
Congratulations Brian and Benny on delivering a fun ride.
The artist, Benny Jordan (aka B. Paul Jordan) is working on another project, with Jason Dube of Scattered Comic Studios, a great new comic with the title of “Shadow Hunters.”

Disclaimer: I was approached by the author to give his book a try. I’m always open to supporting new talent. I have no financial gain from the sales or success of Zombie Outlaw – I just hope they contain the undead outbreak to Irvine, Ca!
One of my favorite writers Matt Fraction was a special guest on the Axel-in-Charge column this week on Comic Book Resources – a Friday must for all Marvel fans. I really excited by his response to the question of what elements he will tap into for the upcoming Avengers Vs X-Men epic.
“Not to put too fine a point on it, the Phoenix! I put a lot of my back into growing Hope as a character. I was very present in those early conversations figuring out what this little girl’s destiny was going to be — who she was and who she was going to become. And I became quite fond of her and what she represents. I have a daughter and we don’t have enough girl-heroes to go around. So the idea of being a part of telling this story where Hope and the Phoenix would encounter each other at long last? That was a huge payoff.
The Phoenix stuff, with the exception of being a red herring in one story arc, largely went untouched when I was on Uncanny [X-Men]. I just used it to kind of foreshadow that this was coming, though at the time I didn’t know when or how it would play out. Even though the plans have changed, you can see foreshadowing for this back in the early #500s. In my first four or five issues of “Uncanny,” we were foreshadowing “Second Coming” and “AvX.” And then I left the book, but to be back and now be a part of it is like having my cake and eating it too. And there’s a bunch of other stuff. There’s another big location that the gang goes to that I don’t want to spoil, but in issue #7, I got to do a real big piece of the Marvel puzzle that I hadn’t had a chance to touch otherwise. The whole event has been a chance to play with all the toys at once in all these fun, new combinations.”
Fraction continues writing The Mighty Thor, Invincible Iron Man and The Defenders and his creator owned epic Casanova. It will be great to see him write with the X-Men again in AVX. I was a huge fan of his run. This is just speculation but I wonder if Matt might be a front-runner to take over the Avengers franchise after Bendis?
The Walking Dead fans are buzzing with the announcement of The Governor appearing in Season Three on AMC. Creator Robert Kirkman praised British actor David Morrissey.
“More than any other actor, David Morrissey came in and wanted to embrace everything that there is to the Governor,” Kirkman told MTV News. “He knew this is a complicated character, and he knew this was a character that people are going to hate to love.”
“He recognized that this character is a villain,” he added. “A lot of people came in and were like, ‘But he’s a good guy inside, right?’ They want that nuance, and that’s definitely important. We definitely have that. The Governor isn’t a one-note character; there are a lot of layers to that onion. But this is a sadistic guy. David Morrissey, more than any other actor, really wanted to sink his teeth into that role. He wants to embrace everything there is about the Governor.”

The Governor commits unspeakable acts against the survivors fans know and love in the graphic novel series. Kirkman says the Governor’s television counterpart will be just as sadistic.
“It was really important to me that no one gets the sense that we’re neutering the Governor from the comics or holding anything back in any way,” said Kirkman. “We’re definitely going to do the character justice, and season three will be that much crazier and that much more intense because of it.”
For the entire interview here’s the MTV News link.
A big question for fans is if Michonne will make her debut on the series too since she’s part of the action in the Governor arc in the books.
