Armie Hammer as Batman?

Justice League #1 DC Comics, Art by Jim Lee

Rumor or real?

Will Armie Hammer (The Social Network, The Lone Ranger) play Batman in a potential Justice League movie? Moviehole.net reports that Hammer is a top contender to play the caped crusader in a film about the DC Comics super group.

Hammer was cast as Batman in George Miller’s Justice League of America project that never got off the ground. Hammer’s star was skyrocketed since then and he’s reportedly on the radar to wear the Batsuit.

If this turns out to be true it likely means no potential Dark Knight continuation with Joseph Gordon-Levitt as a new Batman or Nightwing.

This is speculation but Hammer is a good choice for Justice League but I just see him as Aquaman.

New Guests for Emerald City Comicon

Emerald City Comicon announced new guests for next year’s event in Seattle.

Gambit #1 courtesy Marvel

Terry Moore – Huge thanks to my comic book reading club member Susan to turning me on to Moore’s Rachel Rising. The creator/writer/artist is also acclaimed for Echo and Strangers in Paradise.

Clay Mann is coming back next year. The former X-Men: Legacy artist is now drawing the Gambit solo series. I have a spectacular print of Rogue and Gambit embracing – as they should – sorry Magneto.

Aaron Lopresti (Justice League International, Green Arrow) is returning to Seattle.

Bob Layton – LEGEND! The classic Iron Man artist!

Emerald City Comicon is March 1-3, 2013 and this year they’re taking over the entire Washington State Convention Center.

Is Red Skull A Mutant In Uncanny Avengers?

Uncanny Avengers #2 courtesy Marvel

Uncanny Avengers leads the Marvel NOW relaunch this week. Rick Remender and John Cassaday kick off a new kind of team made of Avengers and X-Men to face a classic enemy. Captain America, Wolverine, Thor, Scarlet Witch, Rogue and Havok assemble to take on the threat of a reborn Red Skull – now with an anti-mutant agenda.

In the issue #3 preview Marvel teased the super-villain’s new power to incite anti-mutant violence around the world. In the teaser for issue #4 Thor appears to have turned against his friends. Is he under the influence of the Skull?

Could the Red Skull have been reborn as a mutant somehow? There’s nothing like self-loathing to fuel an insane criminal’s fury!

Uncanny Avengers is the publisher’s effort to lower the barriers between franchises. It makes sense that have Earth’s Mightiest Heroes and the Children of the Atom working together – especially in light of new mutants being born in the aftermath of AvX.

What I enjoy even more is the fact that a villain doesn’t have to always fight the same heroes.

Brian Michael Bendis took the Spider-Man villain and elevated him to a major threat to Avengers. Norman Osborn eventually took control of the Avengers and SHIELD, attacked the X-Men and Asgard.

It appears Rick Remender is going to make the classic Captain America enemy the new number one enemy of the Marvel Now! Can Sin be far behind?

If the Red Skull’s new reign of terror is a hit with comic fans perhaps we’ll see Hugo Weaving reprise his role and be the big bad guy of an Avengers 3?

I’m getting a sneak peek at Uncanny Avengers #1 tonight! Watch for a review soon!

Batgirl Meets Catwoman

Batgirl #13 courtesy DC Comics

Batgirl #13 features a first time meeting and a deadly reunion for Barbara Gordon this week! Batgirl and Catwoman will cross paths for the first time in The New 52! Will Barbara and Selena Kyle connect or clash? Artist Ed Benes joins Gail Simone for the latest chapter.

In Batgirl #9 Gail Simone wrote one of my favorite tie-ins to the Batman: Night of the Owls crossover. The Talon Barbara faced on the Night of the Owls is back with a vengeance in this issue too!

It only gets more dangerous for Barbara! The Joker returns in Death of the Family starting in this week’s Batman #13. The villain will target Batman’s allies and some enemies. Barbara’s “reunion” with the Joker will happen in Batgirl #15.

Avengers vs. Zombies!

Marvel Universe vs. The Avengers courtesy Marvel.com

This week Jonathan Maberry is taking you back to a horrific future filled with heroes turned zombies. The man behind Marvel Universe vs. The Punisher and Marvel Universe vs. Wolverine returns with Marvel Universe vs. The Avengers.

What’s left of Earth’s Mightiest Heroes fights to survive a plague ravaged planet. Maberry tells Marvel.com the horror hits home for Hawkeye.

“The story is intensely personal, as all stories of great cultural trauma,” the writer asserts. “These are horror stories, and MARVEL UNIVERSE VS THE AVENGERS takes the horror down to a very personal level. We are no longer witnessing the world’s hurt or the cultural hurt, we’re inside the head –and heart—of a man who is experiencing the most personal kind of hurt.”

“The story is told from Hawkeye’s perspective, but most of the big guns are there: Thor, Hulk—red and green versions—Iron Man, Giant Man, Luke Cage, Black Widow, Mockingbird, Spider-Man, and others,” reveals Maberry. “We also check in on the kids at Avengers Academy. The events in these four issues cut a bloody swath across the entire Avengers landscape.”

Leandro Fernandez is the artist on this four part series. Part One is out this week. For more of his interview here’s the Marvel.com link.

Cable and X-Force: Inside Marvel’s Most Wanted

Cable and X-Force #1 courtesy Marvel

Nathan Summers is back running the team he founded back in the 1990’s. New Mutants evolved into X-Force. In recent years the X-Force concept evolved and the team was run by Wolverine as a covert ops unit doing the dirty work the X-Men couldn’t. In 2013 Cable and X-Force launches in the Marvel Now. Writer Dennis Hopeless recruits Colossus, Domino, Dr. Nemesis and Forge for this new team of mutants that have been branded as terrorists. Hopeless tells Comics Newsarama about his plans for the team and the roster.

I was really interested in the inclusion of Colossus who has literally been to several versions of hell and back thanks to Magik, his bonding with Cyttorak and possession by the Phoenix Force. Apparently things will get even worse for Peter.

“Colossus is coming out of a pretty dark period when our book kicks off. Peter has a lot of regrets. He’s an introspective guy and his recent past will definitely weigh on him. All of that will affect his decision-making for sure.

Unfortunately, we won’t be giving the guy much of a break in which to reflect. He’ll be busy running for his life.”

This new book marks a reunion between Nathan and Domino. Hopeless says don’t expect the former lovers to have the same dynamic.

“Domino has developed into a different kind of character lately. She’s matured some I think and like you said, she now at least tries to be a hero first.

Both Domino and Cable have grown into different people than when they were together. Cable may not look it, but he’s a lifetime beyond the man Domino knew. He raised a daughter, got married and grew old with his wife. Fans shouldn’t expect these two to pick right back up where they left off and fall into bed together. That wouldn’t make any sense.

But they are going to have to work together. They’ll have to figure out what all that history means in the here and now. It’s a complex relationship that’s very fun to write.”

I was thrilled to see that Dr. Nemesis will be part of the team. The genius egomaniac has a new look Hopeless said was redesigned by Salvador Larroca.

Hopeless says he will address Forge and his most recent appearance in which he was the bad guy in the Ghost Boxes storyline.

Sam Humphries and Ron Garney will launch a brand new Uncanny X-Force title. Hopeless says “there will definitely be some interaction between the two X-Force books. Just not right off the bat. These are very different books.”

For more of his interview here’s the Comics Newsarama link.

Opinion: I’m in on this book because of Colossus, Domino, Dr. Nemesis and Salvador Larroca’s art. Making me like Cable? That’s the challenge for Hopeless but I’ll give it a try.

The Joker Attacks! Batman #13 Preview

Batman #13 courtesy DC Comics, a Buzzfeed exclusive

DC Comics, Scott Snyder and Greg Capullo unleash the Joker on Gotham City as Death of the Family kicks off this Wednesday. Buzzfeed has an exclusive first look inside Batman #13 in which the clown prince of crime emerges in the Gotham City Police Department.

The Joker has been missing for a year. The villain’s carved off face was left hanging in Arkham Asylum back in Detective Comics #1. Greg Capullo captures the shock and horror on Jim Gordon’s face as he realizes the foe is back. In the New 52 continuity the Joker shot Barbara (just like in Alan Moore’s classic The Killing Joke) but in the reboot Barbara recovered to become Batgirl again. It’s chilling to see Joker taunt Commissioner Gordon about Barbara.

Batman #13 courtesy DC Comics, a Buzzfeed exclusive

The Joker will target every member of the Batman family (and some enemies) in this new arc. With a title like Death of the Family perhaps the Batman alliance of heroes will be left broken.

I can only imagine the Joker by Snyder and Capullo – the team that gave us that creepy kid in the Owl mask saying “hurt him some more” as Batman was tortured by a Talon.
